Yeah, it's that important.
Makes me wonder if mine doesn't do the same. The other day I needed a foot of 2" pipe and he said he was all out, well the other day they had 2-3 scrap pieces...I wonder if they'll get mad if I jump in their dumpster?Necrosis wrote: They throw away sections of 1 metre long stainless steel regularly..

at my home depot there is this old guy that works in th plumbing department who is just flat out awesome
i went in there one day looking for parts for a propane meter and i had this hydralic fitting ith me that i was going to use as part of the meter and he asked what the taper was on it and i said i dont know
so then he pulled out these two fittings one was npt one wasnt turned out the fitting wasnt npt
he saved me $1.59
if i didnt know i would have bought the npt fitting which wouldnt have worked
the only time ive had trouble with hardware employees was when i bought a a piece of 3 in pipe, a piezo, a cleanout cap, a dwv bell reducer, and the female piece for the cleanout cap
they thought i was building a pipe bomb
i told them i recently got a welder and these were parts for a black smithing forge i was makeing
they bought the story

I also forgot my mom and I were in True Value and I was looking for the special elbow for my shock pump the one with the mounting points and we were just about to leave because we didn't find it and the guy that was working that day came over ''do you need any help?'' I said ''No thanks.'' we were about to leave and he said ''what Are you looking for?''
I said a cirtain plumbing piece I looked for it but you didn't have it. ''Well, let me help'' he said. we went down the isle he was looking for it for 10 minutes and I mentioned that it wasn't there and he got angry at me saying that I didn't tell him it wasn't there and I pointed to the 1/2'' ones and said it is just like his but 3/4'' he said ''well why can't you use this this should work right?'' I said ''no it won't I need 3/4'' and he said '' you are just like al children these days very picky.

I hate when people do that, fall back on some -ism (racism, sexism, agism particularly) when they look like idiots.

Personally i have never had a problem.
Nobody says a word to me at lowes. I walk back and forth from the plumbing to the compressors for nearly an hour sometimes and never suspected of shoplifting or anything.
Well there is one time i went to buy a sprinkler valve from lowes. I looked on the website and it said they had them in stock and the specific store i was going to. So i went, i looked around everywhere that i thought it may be. I then asked a sales person there. He looked around for about 10 minutes and then started searching on the computer and told me he didnt know. He didnt even know what a sprinkler valve was.
So i printed a picture off my computer and brought it in the next day and showed it to one of the managers. They said they dont carry them.
Goes to show you how poorly some stores websites are made. And also syhows what little knowledge the sales people have of what they do and dont sell.

Hardware stores have salespeople?
Technology and service places where few but expensive items are sold have proper salespeople, large hardware and grocery stores stock tens of thousands of lines and have restockers and cashiers, very little active sales pitching except at special counters.
That's why if you ask the most likely thing is they'll know roughly where something of its type will be but no in-depth knowledge of it.
On the theme of the thread, I've never had any bother despite lurking for ages in the copper/brass fitting/pipe section and fiddling with small bits and pieces. Still, no place is the same, go in twice and the staff could be different.

Nope, theres salespeople all right.
You must have never been to ohio.
At my lowes, there is a person assigned to each section and are usually walking around in there few select isles.

Oddly enough I haven't found a reason to be in Ohio
Still sounded exactly like a common scenario of asking a random person in a large store for an item.

He was actually the plumbing/sprinkler/gardening guy.
And honestly there is no reason to be in ohio.

Agreed, I live there and there is nothing special about it.iisthemuffin wrote:And honestly there is no reason to be in ohio.
Maybe Ohio Lowes don't carry sprinkler valves, because the one by me doesn't either.
That sucks about ohio, but here in illinois not that many people even know what a sprinkler system is, apparantly

[quote="DYICanada has some ridiculous laws as well, but the enforcement is so poor, and the punishment so insignificant, that very few people in the rural areas have to worry about the legality of what they're doing. Of course, due to this lack of enforcement, we have lazy and stupid criminals, which, through some sort of evolutionary process, makes any real harmful crimes even less common. [/quote]
Evolution / natural selection is great.
I am 32 and well respected for my knowledge and skills (or so I tell myself) within my hardware community. Besides, I am an undependant commercial contractor. With one exception, I have had nothing but support with my purchases and projects. The one exception was from a retired plumber who thought "all such retrofitting of propane torches was dangerous" and that I should think up a different hobby.

I forgot to mention, Most Home depots have a couple coffee thermos's in the front near the doors (Usually near lumber). Looks like it's only for employees but it's not. I bring my own cup and get one when I walk in.
refill it on the way out too... Awesome.
It's funny because on my way there, is a starbucks with a lot of goofy types. Also there's a borders books for bookworm goofy types.
Lately my favotite coffee shop is home depot. Screw $3 coffee, it's usually pretty strong and they never mind how many cups I get.
A few of them actually smile!
So next time your there grab yourself a cup of "Thunderjoe" On me if you want! 8)

Yup! They actually frown on employees drinking it, as it is specifically geared toward their commercial customers who frequent their store often. Lowe's also has this freebie, and hot cocoa. It will be by the lumber entrance/exit.THUNDERLORD wrote:I forgot to mention, Most Home depots have a couple coffee thermos's in the front near the doors (Usually near lumber).
