Explode in ya face Deodorant Cans.

Hi all,

After I shot a Deodorant can with my homemade bow and punctured it and everything just sprayed everywhere my parents have banned me from all my stuff, and this puts my chances of entering into Pat123's contest in Hella Jeopardy.

I would like to know if anyone out there has scientific data, proof that if you just shoot a can of Deodorant it's not going to do the magical blow up and send splinters everywhere like all parents think.

After seeing all the spudding vids of people shooting deodorant cans they just spray like mine did. Please help me prove
to them that it's safe.

Thanks,

Happy SPuddin'

Metal, especially thin metal, has a small chance of fracturing into pieces that would fly everywhere.

The thinness of a deodorant can practically makes it impossible it fracture into pieces unless chilled to extreme low temperatures like -100 degrees.

Cool, so far I haven't been shooting anything in those temperatures.

i have no "scientific" evidence that it wont blow up, but i garentee you that unless there is an open flame near by, nothing will happen. its simple really, no heat, no fire.

Speaking on the subject of open flame,

Well luckily, I didn't get caught doing that one otherwise my parents would have nutted.
I got caught Shooting it without a flame near-by, this was while my parents were away and I had my mates over.

Even if it does blow up it will not shrapnel, I used to blow up aerosol cans at the beach with my friends when I was younger... Becach+Fire+Spraypaint = boom and painted foreshore

Anyway out of the 40cans we must of done in half a year, none of them shrapnel, they only blow apart.

A few years back me an my mates would blow up deodorant cans by throwing them in the fire and stuff so we had alot of fun with them. My one mate threw one against the wall, it punctured and didn't explode, it just started spewing out the deodorant. My mate then thought he would light the deodorant spraying out the hole, which he did, he then picked up the can and started playing with it as the deodorant was spraying out the puncture on fire. I basically turned and ran about 20 meters away, but luckily it didn't explode.

But now to your query. The deodorant can at standard temperature and pressure should not explode if punctured(*), the reason being the can is designed to hold the deodorant at normal temperature and pressure, so if punctured it shouldn't explode, just release all the pressure out of the puncture. It will explode however if you heat it in a fire

(*) - Depends on the puncture i guess, an arrow it probably wont explode, but if you crush the can it will.
Have a look at Chaos' stainless steel rifle, he has a video of shooting deodorant cans with sinkers at high pressures.

Cool, I will check that out.
A question;

How many of Your Parents would nut and say the thing would explode if you said, "I'm gonna shoot a Deodorant Can" ?

My mom is worried about a propane bottle exploding if i use it to power my pneumatic gun, same with CO2. My advice would be educate them on the principals and forces involved, not only will it show your parents you know exactly what your doing, but it will also give them peace of mind because they will know that it is safe.

Tried That and failed miserably. Very miserably. My dad just tells me when i say,
"Trust me dad I know" He goes "No you don't know." and ignores me.

Well don't say that, just blabber on about physics and big words.

My parents didn't want me to build my first spudgun but I did when they were away, when they realised how awesome they were, how responsible I was and how much feedback I got from adults in my area and what not they don't mind.

Now my dad starts talking to people about them like he knows what he's saying :P

haha, i shoot deodorant cans all the time with my pellet gun. None of them have ever exploded, although one did scare me when i took off like a rocket and shot towards me  if you wanted to make it shrapnell you could put it in dry ice for a while then shoot it, other than that i don't really think it would. Try telling ur parents to prove to you that they can explode

That's not a bad idea, hmmmmm.........

@MrCrowley, My dad loves the fact I'm into spudgunning He does what you dad does and talks to people like that, which is cool. But he was brought up around and with firearms so he is safety man to the max, which is cool but when it get's to the point were I can't put any of my guns over 50psi at all anytime, it get's annoying.

My Parents are still in the firm belief that deodorant cans explode when shot. I might buy 5 deodorant cans and line them up. And at a safe distance I'll invite my parents over and shoot every can with either my Bow or Pneumatic gun, then when they see that they don't explode they should be satisfied, they'll just say how much of a waste of money it was.

what about the marble in spray paint cans? isn't there a possibility of that flying at you?

Ill give you some advice on what to say: -
1.Ask if a can explodes when you push the button and gas comes out. It doesn't, then say why should it explode if it gets a hole, it wont, it will just exhaust the pressure just like holding the button down.
2.Ask if the gas ignites when you push the button down, it doesn't, then ask why the gas would explode if it got punctured, it won't, the gas will ignite only if there is sufficient heat.

Then after that, ask him to give you some good evidence as to why it will explode if it gets a hole in it.
