Having read that, I feel compelled to link to a site that you really do need a warning about.

That was one of the first sites I saw when I started experimenting with explosives. Really made me respect their power and be careful, and 2 years later I've yet to have a major accident, just minor burns.

No need to be sorry about it,it is a good story to tell people and to let them feel the piece of copper in my cheek is good for people reactions.

I wonder how many times my dad has blow himself up,I know of about 3 times and one were he has some Black Powder left in his skin like a tattoo but with black powder.

Best to have a warning some think is too much, than one that isn't enough - or I could just direct link to disturbing images without a warning: Do you dare?

@Killjoy: I agree it can be done safely, but hitting blasting caps with a hammer isn't even following basic safety principles.

If you tell someone they might be injured or die, it won't necessarily dissuade poor behaviour.
Show them the kind of mess their relatives might have to identify? That might get their attention.

Shock tactics are sometimes the best way to go - the old cliché, "Cruel to be kind".

It was good you put an adequate warning before the link, it was needed. I just thought it wasn't enough to make me sick, as alot of the wounds were all mashed up and you can't make specific details of bones and stuff.

I thought the thing with the kid's head was discusting. It was pretty anti-explosive. That is only what happens WHEN PEOPLE ARE REALLY STUPID. Come on, why would you make a pipe bomb (and I haven't done this or made any pipebomb) with such an unstable or ignitable compound that it blows up when you are screwing the cap on!??! It was probably match heads.... Oh yeah, and how does a smokebomb comp make a co2 cartridge explode, but at the same time shoot throught the leg making perfect circle? I don't think that was smoke comp lol... How does THAT explode? They need to get it right. They say it as if it is fact that you will automatically end up like this if you hold an M-80 or similar device. However, there are a lot of people trying this stuff who have no idea what they are doing.

^^thats probably how it was reported to the police, so the guy was just referencing but he didn't really know.

Well thats kind of a given now isn't it haha. it was lucky the hammer didn't get blown off the handle and into someone, I'm seen some weird stuff happen with explosives go off near things.

One of the main problems is that people get the explosive compound in/on the threads and either forget or fail to properly wipe it off the threads, so screwing on the cap can create enough pressure and/or fiction to detonate the mixture. Thats why its always best to clean the threads extremely well, and if using powder as a filler, dampen the threads with rubbing alcohol to temporally stabilize any powder left and screw the cap on very slowly, which "stubs" obviously didn't do.

Of course people tend to use powder as a filler, which is very stupid as it can shift once closed if not properly packed and accidentally self ignite if it is unstable enough (such as flash powder), which is probably what happened to the genius in the bag.

Explosives are fun, but theres no room for error and rarely do you get a second chance. I've had a friend burn himself with acid trying to make nitrocellulose (not necessarily an explosive), and drop a bowl of flash powder which caused it to ignite, badly burning him. And I've been hit with shrapnel and been pretty burned from accidental ignition. Its just better to leave it alone unless your with someone who knows what they're doing and can teach you, and its best not to take the self taught route (like I did)

I wish explosives were as available to me, but the only thing 'bad' i've done, was with some stupid friends a few years back. There was a washing machine (front load) on the side of a street, but the street was pretty much empty.

And we filled it with about a litre of petrol, then I went up towards it to light it with a match, but my stupid friend decided to do it himself with a lighter, so he had to stick his arm in there, instead of throwing the match.

It was a very nice fireball I must say, looked like an afterburner on a jet, engulfed my friends leg, which later turned purple, and then after several weeks was good again.

Apart from that, for years we'd been lightening modded firework bombs in the middle of a cave network on a local fort called <A HREF="http://www.davidwallphoto.com/images/%7 ... jpg">North Head </a> which resulted in really loud bangs, we even had an American couple from Michigan complement us on our efforts once

LOL, I think it is funny how everyone thinks Americans like to blow stuff up... However I fit that stereotype....

haha nice mr crowly. Petrol sure is a fun thing except when it catches you on fire. Clearly your friend learned that not all modern technology is a good thing though.

And yeah for a long time I used to take apart fireworks and modify them, you know make them bigger with more powder. But it got expensive and time consuming, so I just bought the chemicals to make flash powder.

The cave story reminds me of what my friends (about 10) and I did one time. About two years ago we were bored and downtown. So we found an alley and my friend tried lighting this string of fireworks I had in the alley, but the fuse burned out at the very end. I told him to get another one, but he was stubborn and tried lighting the fuse stub, which caught the paper wrapping on fire and almost instantly the entire string went off in our faces. We bolted out the alley as they continued to go off.
Well the fireworks sounded like gunfire and with us running out of the alley someone thought a shooting had happened and called the cops. so we hid and watched two patrolmen show up and search the area with guns drawn, and left pissed when they found nothing. Good times haha.

That's how me and my friends always act when we tell people our stories gone wrong, like that fireball washing machine one, you always say in a reflecting tone, 'good times' and people just look at you weird

Like the time my friend and I were having a Roman Candle fight, and he pointed it at the ground, it ricocheted and hit my eye lid as I closed my eye. If I didn't close my eye, I probably would've lost it. Good times...

haha yeah same here. "Good times" is like the simple translation of "yes it was stupid, dangerous, and probably could've killed us or harmed us greatly, but it was fun so watch'a gonna say about it?"

Nice work with the roman candle fight. My friends and I throw stuff at each other all the time like rocks, poker chips, beer bottles, etc. Well one time I through a rock at my friend and hit him right above the eye which gave a nice gash ,so we had to go to the emergency room cause he didn't want a "scar", though my other friend still calls him scarface.

And another time we were bored one night, drunk, and had a few boos bottles. So we got in my car and cruised around town and threw bottles at parked cars in an attempt to break the car windows. It was horribly stupid, and here could've gotten us shot, but hey good times..

When me and my cousin were about 6 we were at a military rifle range and found a Smoke grenade, that we thought was a real grenade and was still live. so being the adventureous type, we loaded it onto a skateboard to go show our parents. So down this hill we go. Keeping this "grenade" from falling.

Only to be dissapointed that it was a smoke grenade and it was spent.

Normaly when retelling this story one tends to leave out the last part of the story( and the smoke part)

Well many a Good time we have had with explosives us two. (once or twice particulary dumb. But they do also say "Young and Dumb".

You're right, in a lot of them it's not too clear what you're actually seeing, but the one of the one where the kid put a blasting cap in his mouth... that one is all too clear.

I'm all but completely desensitised, yet I still find myself naturally trying to look away from that picture.
