Bunker Thoughts

Currently, I'm working on a paintball field. It's rather small (about the size of a normal speedball field). Me being who I am, however, would like something a little less conventional for bunkers.

Right now, I have fall away bunkers (can be pulled down by the opposite team), shoot through bunkers, and see through bunkers (made from hardware cloth). I also have fairly thick grass to act as a bunker.

I was wondering if there are any ideas from you guys (players or not) that are different than the basic paintball bunker. Any suggestions are welcome.

There was this one story where this old paintball guy hid behind this loseish tarp and sat there with paint raining down on it. He sat there and measured the accuracy of the players ( I think it was 3 against 1) by telling where the balls hit on the tarp because the paintballs made the tarp fly back a little when they hit it. he then went on taking out all of the other players. Im not even sure if the storys true im pretty sure "most" of it is, Just an idea a tarp should be relatively cheap too.

Another one would be some of those giant black irragation pipe, you could make a maze esque contraption.

foxholes would definetly be sweet 8) especially if you had a lot of them, and there pretty easy to make

Foxholes are good, and as long as you're digging, why not some trenches? Might be good if you're planning on making it a woodsball field, but it might be a bit small for scenario play.

A buddy helping with the field mentioned foxholes and trenches. I look over it and see if there is room (maybe two or three would be sweet).

Any more?

An actual pill box maybe.

Canoes! Canoes! Canoes!

our local paint ball course has a field set up with a bunch of randomly placed canoes (some sticking half-way out of the ground and some sitting on its side) and they work great!

That or you could just buy a couple dozen bails of hay for a lot cheaper.

EDIT: OooH! just got another idea. Those big-ass spools would work good too.

Make a mock up of a busted tank or something. Sandbags. Plexiglass. If you do make foxholes, you might want to line the dirt walls with something, they'll cave in over time.

I forgot about the spools. I could make them where a player can roll them around if necessary. The power company should be gracious enough to supply me.

Atlantis: I was going to line the foxholes. I have access to free pallets that supply plenty of wood. And a mock tank would be awesome.

As far as the pill box, that's basically what the two bases on both sides are.

Any ideas on shoot through bunkers? Right now, all we have is a piece of plastic up that paintballs can go through. Eventually, however, the plastic will have to be replaced.

Shoot through bunkers, huh? Best idea I can come up with is to build a parapet, or a wall with murder holes. One field I've seen had old 50 gal. oil drums, cut in half with a shooting slit about 3/4 up the side. Looks kind of like a stationary blast shield. You'd have to bolt some support brackets to them to keep them standing, should be easy to make out of 2x4.

You can also put gaps in a stack of sandbags using 2x4 to support the bags above the hole, just be sure that everything is well balanced so it doesn't topple over.

For a shoot through bunker, you could just use a pallet, it would provide a little bit of cover but someone could also shoot through the slits between the boards.

Another cool type of bunker would be desks turned over and laying on their sides.

Also, do you have any old cars? Take the windows out and you have a great bunker.

At my local paintball field they have foxholes build into the sides of a hill and they are lined with sandbags. The sandbags keep going about a foot above the dirt line. Then there is an old satellite dish covering the entire thing. with sand bags at the corners to hold it up. And also so you can still shoot out of it, but is someone shoots at you then you can duck down.

wooden privacy fence makes good bunkers, old tires also work prety well to.
