And often, that random person is my father - for some reason, people keep falsely assuming he's a shop worker, despite the fact that he's not wearing any sort of uniform or anything.

His greatest moment was when a woman asked him if he could open a cabinet for her to look at something, and his response was:
"Sure. Have you got a brick?" :D

I often encountered that same situation with my father when i was younger, usually in large department stores in the electronics section.
My fathers responses were less humourous than your though. :)

They do that all the time to me. They're like "Are you sure you don't mean...THIS?" and hold up some random hand-turned valve. and in my mind I'm like "NO I DON'T F***ING MEAN THAT I SAID SOLENOID THATS NOT A SOLENOID IS IT YA ****" but I just say "thanks, but that's not it"

That is so true, there's a bookstore near where I live with a starbucks inside it, you should see how many goofy people hang out in there

I actually just had my first bad experience with Lowes today, and it wasn't even cannon construction related. I went there to buy trimmer line, and the employee there tried to tell me that it was cheaper to buy pre-cut lengths of line rather than buying one of those giant spools of line, when I actually saved $7 buying the giant spool.

They'll always try to get you with that approach, same with me and PVC. I wanted to buy 10 feet and they suggested I buy it in 2' increments :?

The taxes are the thing that kills you. Kinda off topic (still relating to store workers) I went to guitar center to pick up a 15 watt amp once, and this guy kept on trying to sell me the 30 watt. Im like, well maybe later when i have money. He kept on persisting that I should buy it. I think I said "I think Ill stick with the 15watt because I dont have another hundred dollars for the 30watt" Atleast 5 more times before we actually got to the register
