London Times Obituary of the late Mr. Common Sense

'Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in
charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an Elastoplast to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better
treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her
lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, I Want It Now, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I found this off a forum on instructables.com (Seen a couple of people from SF post some Spudgun instructables there)
Its kinda funny, but sadly its true.

That was poignantly stated. It hasn't died off completely. There are many in the working classes who cling to it and live by it. Most of the ruling and elite classes in the western world however have long ago dismissed it.

Ah, i remember that, the McDonalds settlement for when a woman spilled hot coffee on herself and then sues McDonalds, even with a caution sign that said "Be careful, HOT", or something to that extent.

I think he lingers in society, its just not prevalent anymore. I mean sometimes we dont have common sense, but it does come back. So yeah, we got crazy people in this world, so there will always be both, lack of common sense, and full of common sense i guess you can put it that way.

Not to be a killjoy, but have you ever actually read the details of that case? McDonald's was BEGGING to be sued. Hell, their own internal study determined that the coffee they were serving was too hot to drink(*); that it would cause serious burns if somebody spilled it on themselves.

Seriously, I'm all for disbarring lawyers who file frivelous lawsuits.... But again, read the details of that case before you pass judgement.


Oh, and all she asked for initially was the cost of her medical bills (IIRC, approximately $30k). 'Tweren't until McDonald's brought in the lawyers that she did too... And at that point she was pissed enough to want some vengence.


And as an added bonus, I've actually eaten at the McDonald's in question.




(*) Note that the corporate office's response was basically, "Nobody buys coffee and drinks it right away. They buy it, drive to the office, and THEN they drink it. We want it piping hot when they arrive at the office. Yes, that means it has to be Too F'ing Hot For Words when purchased."

That's pretty cool. I do wish you would send a few of those In n Out Burger stores that populate SoCal back East this way. Everytime I'm out there, the first thing I do is find one close by and visit it as many times as I can while I'm there. IMO, hands-down the best fast food type burgers in the land.

I have too agree with what you said... and I think it's all about schools... these days students have too many rights

when I was at school me and my classmates were acctually afriad of the teacher... but in a kind of possitive way - we knew that if we misbehave we would be in big troubles...

In n' Out burger is at the top when it comes to quality in the fast food business.
Even here in vegas the meat is never frozen and shipped daily from In n' Out burgers meat plant in California

common sense goes in cycles. One day man will relearn fire is hot by sticking his hand in, than he won't do it again.

I as a student also agree with what Poland said! No one listens to teachers any more, no one learns, most children are bullies, idiots or both. Intelegent people lock them selves in the libary, chmistry lab or in some coner of play grounds. Teachers should do soem more wipping, acctually punish children who mis beahve and reward those that do not. Sooner or later they will get punished any how! If they fail at finding a collage or job, if they beat some one up and get arrested, only because parents are unable to say a simple two leter word: NO. Pisses me of!

And I have been to the In n Out store behind the Luxor in Vegas...4 days in a row for lunch one time.... I've gone through countless In n Out tee shirts over the last 20 years...my last one is getting a little ragged now...oops, time for another trip out West I guess.... 8) ( yeah I know you can get them online...)

True say man, we actually had a student strike once. I only thought people society depends on had the priviledge of striking...if anything now

Lol I am a teacher myself and I have been reprimended harshly by my headmaster for reprimanding an unruly student... and before you ask I didn't say anything inappropriate, I didn't use swear words... my fault is that I expect students to acctually do their homework and behave properly

BTW it's the worst job of all but someone has to do it...

To quote bush: "teachers are the only people who educate our children". Really he is right, one of the most important jobs but not a very enjoyable one at times and not always the most rewarding. We have ONE teacher who acctually does something if you msibehave! When i was smaller i called him santa because of his apearance. After writing out i will not call my teacher santa anymore, 500 times i never did it again. He threw a guy into a garbage can head first for chewing gum, afte rbeing told not to 15times! It is a little extreme but still, thats the way it should be! Respect and disiplin are the two key factors!
