Good news..I had a few hours spare today so I put together a little forge. I wanted something compact that could sit away in a corner, run off a mid sized LPG tank but still have good power and be able to forge a nice big blade.

I made it from a small propane tank, emptied, filled it with water and cut holes in either end (large enough to pass through a 3"+ wide blade which should be plenty. Knocked up a venturi burner and welded it all together, adding some rockwool to keep heat loss down a bit. It has a metal bar welded to it so it can be held in a vice (our vice has a small anvil about 15 cm square on it) to do small blades, or sat on my ground railway sleeper for big blades.

When our shed is open up completely there's lots of ventilation so no CO risk, plus I can just run it off a BBQ sized propane bottle. It's a public holiday tomorrow so I wont be able to get the bottle I found for it refilled (When I was at the tip scrounging for the regulator and propane tank I found a BBQ tank, still in date and certified, nothing wrong with it..jackpot )

Any suggestions from anyone (or you Jake?) about a first project? I mean, I've done some forging/smithing before.. but needless to say I'm not going to go for damascus or anything on my first shot. Just a reasonable first (educated) forging project. Maybe a small knife, a simpler kind like a kiridashi or one of the puuko Jake are famous for?

Forging a blade takes quite a lot of practice, i think you should just train bending, drawing, cutting etc. Kiridashi is guite easy to make, ofc depending of the material you choose. I could thow a small video tomorrow of making one.

I have spring steel, large mower blades (from a big ride on mower the size of a small car- I made one out of these by grinding and it takes a good edge with some work and holds it well, hardness about the same as a low-mid quality HSS (guess how I know ) and old tools eg. files to work with. I have a fair bulk of it available and it's all free. I'm thinking of buying some oil hardening drill rod/silver steel for once I've practiced a bit more. What diameter would you pick to forge a knife out of?

Is some hot roll steel good for practicing with? Granted it will never make a workable utensil but I'm just curious if it would be a good practice medium as I have an even more massive supply.

Well, any steel with low carbon continent is good for practicing.

I use 12mm silversteel for my blade's, but 11mm or even 10mm will work.

Springsteel is quite good for larger blade's, if you ask me its too soft for smaller knifes. I dont know about those mower blades, try to harden them.

Over in the land of america we usually have length restrictions on pocket knives and the like, but there aren't any outright bans as far as I'm aware*. Does epoxyland not allow kitchen-length knives? Or is it just an import thing? Even then that seems kinda weird.

*with the ironic exception of texas, which does not allow bowie knives.

Well... Britain has some truly stupid anti-knife laws. To sell knives, of any type except for those intended for "domestic use", a store has to have a special license. Carrying anything except a folding knife with a blade of less than three inches is a criminal offense, unless the carrier can show "good and reasonable cause" for carrying it. "Combat" knives are totally banned, and there are truly draconian rules against the marketing of a knife as a weapon.

Plus, it's illegal to sell a knife to a person under sixteen, with no exceptions.

In practice over the last decade, England has had a number of prosecutions of people carrying small pocket knives and multi-tools, for no other reason than they were carrying them. A BOY SCOUT, in uniform, can't possess a simple pocket knife. UK knife laws are considerably stricter than any set of gun laws in any state or city in the USA, including California and Chicago.

Down here, I wish we could carry 3" blades. Any blade, any time, unless you have a damn good reason, the police confiscate the knife and fine/prostitute you.

Here, if you have a nice puukko on your belt and you look like a nice guy, nobody cares. But the law says, that you can carry a puukko if your outfit clearly says that you are a construction worker, hunter or a scout.

And yes, i once walked into my local supermarket with an 12" bowie on my belt, and yes, i was 8 years old i had my scout-scarf on so nobody cared about it

Haha Where do you source your steel jake? I can only find silver steel in diameter and not flat bar. Do you know of any good places to get flatt bar of any high carbon steel in the UK by any chance? All i can find is crappy mild steel

Silversteel is only sold in in diameter, well i have only seen it that way.

From uk i dont know, i buy my steel from a finnish supplier "www.terasrenki.com"

But if someone wants i could get you steel as im ordering more in few day's, they are normally sold in 1m long bars, or in diameter, interested? OFC im not paying for your stuff
