Lately I'm finding that wide-bellied sheepfoot and wharncliffe style blades are really great for utility tasks. The upsweep typically found on most blades subtracts from the straight portion of blade. I was looking at my Izula and I noticed that it would be perfect... if the blade was flipped upside down. It would then look like a bit like a Santoku and have almost 3 inches of beautiful edge.
Soon I'll make one of these, with a full flat grind.

As i'm getting my shop done during next week, i needed to make a new "tool" as my blade design has evolved during these years. Made this today from piece of silversteel using axis drill, angle grinder, file and sandpaper. Also buffed it little bit. Someone guess what this is

Since it's silver steel, it's likely a knife, aren't puukkos made from it traditionally? Either that or some tooling.

Well, puukkos were traditionally made from stuff that was available, so 0.80%C pure carbon steel is the most traditional stuff, but in the last 30-40 years silvesteel has become the most used stock for good quality puukkos. This is "kind" of a tool. As the old one was pretty much too large to fit my newest blade style i had to make this smaller one.
But as material goes, i have made like... 50 blades from 0.8% carbon steel. It's good stuff, makes good blades for most uses. But i prefer silversteel these days cause i mastered the heat treating of it and i find it easier to forge nice looking blades from round bar (as silversteel is only sold in round bar and 0.8%C is flat stock) Its actually little faster to forge from flat stock and 0.8%C is a lot softer to forge (as an example. It has 0.5% less carbon) The guy who taught me puukkomaking can forge a blade from 5x20mm flat stock in 10 minutes, takes 25-35minutes for me to make one from 12mm silversteel round bar...
Damn, just can't wait to get to forge with my new coal forge, i get the critical 200Celsius more (and much, much more) so the steel becomes ALOT softer to forge, but also its good for the steels structure to forge it in high temperature.

But if i drop the ball from 10 cm, it sure does look like it bounces back 10-11 cm, not sure if its physically possible though
