An unofficial competition was the direction I was thinking about when I first read that there'd be no official competition. How about we call it a "challenge" instead of a competition?

Regardless of whoever else jumps in I'll try to build something by February or March.

Should we start a new thread about this? We'd get more participants if we summarized what has been said here in an easy to access place. "rant on nerf moding" won't attract everyone interested but "Nerf gun challenge" would.

I just came across another case of nerf modding idiocy I found it under the comment on this page
http://www.instructables.com/id/NERF-Sniper-Pistol/
after being asked why he singled his longshot he completly ignores the question and says
Oct 18, 2008. 8:30 PMbenfoxg says:
oh and ps I'm also getting a nerf crossbow =)=)=)=) and I paid $152! =)=)
let me repeat that $152, $152, not pesos or yen but dollars, what could you have done with that money

Ragnarok, I don't think you were a member, but back when Spudtech had a forum, I think that's where most of the big advances were made.

I just started looking through this forum from pure boredom lately. On spudtech, I remember DR and the Halls. I don't know if they are still around, but they always had some good stuff.

I think a forum requires a certain amount of intelligence to get things accomplished. I also really think it should be filled of good spirited people, who won't tell you how wrong you did something, but tell you how to do it right.

I think the Nerf modifications, are simply done mostly by children, who are as of this point in their life, uneducated. Children will be children, and most want want to learn a damned thing. They are entertained by cool names of ''mods'' and being able to brag to their buddies.

As we grow, we get bigger toys.

Member, no. Reader, yes.

As I understand it, a lot happened on the older Spudtech forum, the system that proceeded what we now have under the Archive button in the top right of the screen. Things like the development of the hybrid and the vortex block.

Not sure what happened to all the information in that particular forum.

Not really an excuse. For a start, a lot of members here could be classified as children. I'm 15, and I know that a fair amount of other members are around that age. Of course we do get ghetto creations from some of the very young ones, but it's nowhere near the consistency of poor performance, pointless modifications and ugly improvisation done by many members of the Nerf community.

You'll find that a lot of the more experienced nerfers who build high quality guns will also reside on another site, such as spudfiles.

You will also notice, that these members have created "nerf" guns that can in fact kill small creatures. It is after witnessing this awe filled moment that they tend to stick to more dangerous weapons. The kids you will meet making idiotic modifications to even more idiotic toys have never tasted the true power of a pneumatic or combustion weapon capable of killing their best friend if he/she steps too close.

I also dont recommend inviting these kinds of children to play with large weapons because they tend to want to hurt things, or act stupid around them.... just my $.02

I was thinking, maybe we should make a new forum section designated for Nerf Guns. I was going to get into it once I hit university since I'll have a job and money to spend.

It would be cooler when you click on the "cannons" tab on top it'll display "Nerf Guns" they also need one for "Mini's" too lol.

There are members here who have made very good nerf guns- semi automatic, cartridge ejecting etc. However these are frowned down upon in the nerf community as they are pneumatic. You can make pneumatic guns that aren't too powerful to shoot at each other when using the correct ammo- though due to things spudgunning has produced "nerfers" as a whole tend to hate the idea of pneumatics.

id have to agree with that. age is less of a factor as maturity level as well as ability to learn. i am also 15, but have also built some pretty crazy stuff from ideas i got off this site. not a to mention a "nerf" gun that could hit a man sized target at about 150 feet, and leave a welt, but the guys i play with have a pretty strong "suck it up" rule

Edit: yes, before someone attacks me for it, it IS about 150 feet, measured with a wheel-on-a-stick measuring device
