I was watching a documentary on the Elephant Man and they ran a program to simulate how he would've walked (his gait) by using a 3D model of his skeleton. They had to send the information off to a super computer in Italy which took several weeks to run 39 million simulations until the program found a way to make the skeleton 'walk', all previous 39 million simulations either had the skeleton falling over straight away or after a few steps.

It's a little annoying that by the time I could run a program like that from home, a newer program would've been developed that would still require super computers to run and the original program would seem like vintage software.

My Intel SSD drive made a whole difference running Windows and starting apps, but more importantly doing my day to day job on the Visual Studio program compiler... from 5mn for building a big project to a few seconds!

For applications that are not file-oriented, it didn't make them run faster... that's the RAM and CPU job... it made them start reacting immediately, in a snap. And Windows do not pause anymore, you can run many programs at the same time because even if there's some swapping disk due to memory limit, it's so much faster to swap!

It made my old Thinkpad W500 + Core2 Duo feeling as good as a brand new high end laptop. And "only" by upgrading the drive. I love it! If you guys want a whole new computer for cheap, just upgrade to SSD

I wish I could get a SSD for the same price I can get an i7 Extreme Edition.

My company has an employee chip loaner program. I can "borrow" one. My expense is just buying the new motherboard and memory. A discount on a SSD is all that I get on that end.

My choice is new tires or an SSD. I have to get to work so that's not a choice. I just have to wait for the price to come down and save for it. Saving now for a motherboard for the i7.

I want to get a SSD for my netbook. But the drive costs more than the entire netbook.

Wow they're bloody expensive. On a similar note to my post above, by the time I can afford a SSD, it will seem like vintage hardware

Well, okayyyy, I should not have said "for cheap"
But for less than the cost of a brand new laptop... unless it is a cheap one already Oh well...

my current SSD 160GB is about $315... old SSD generation... if your laptop worth upgrading instead of being replaced, If think it's a good move

Back in the time where 3D photorealistic images were a novelty (long, long ago) I made a few hi-res pictures to insane resolution (4000x3000... just madness ). I did that to print a large poster in a factory. Each picture took... a whole week to be computed!!!

Now, the same picture is done on my laptop in less time than it takes me to write this sentence...

Jeez, now I'm feeling old... time for a Jack Daniel's...

My Netbook was purchased from Costco for just under $300. This does make a disk drive for it seem expensive. I want one for the quick boot and lower power to get more useful life out of the batteries. I would like to extend the 6-7 hour battery life to over 8 hours to make it through a full day.

When I build the i7 system in the fall, I just may bite the bullet and pick up an SSD for it if the price comes down enough with the employee discount.

Speaking of old times, I remember buying my first hard drive for my first PC. It was a huge 30 Meg in size. For you young guys, that is a huge 0.03 Gig. I don't even have a flash drive that small anymore. My smallest is 512 Meg.

I had several brands in the past, for now the best I owned was Lenovo/Thinkpad. No nonsense gadgets, sturdy, reliable... love it. They are expensive though.

I'm not sure the difference of battery life was significant when I switched to SSD. But my laptop is a workstation, not really a power saving computer. CPU and screen eat all the power quickly. My 9 cells battery runs only 4h30 at best. Without SSD, it was 4h00 maybe. I have to carry a spare set anyway. Besides the speed, a great advantage was heat. No heat, at all! Some review on the web say that SSD drives generate a lot of heat. Well, all I can say for my Intel SSD is that after a typical 15 hours day powered on, the drive is barely warm. The only internal heat is from the CPU. And there's also the fact that you can shake the thing without the fear of breaking it. Quite an advantage for a laptop.

I can't remember this one... too long ago
But strangely I remember vividly a older time, how happy I was the day I had a second floppy disk so I didn't have to swap anymore all the time between the DOS System floppy and my data/program floppy. Hard drives were just sci-fi artifacts
And now I couldn't say for sure how many of them are currently plugged in the house network

thats pritty good, my laptop a Toshiba p300. i only get about 40min on high performance.

my vaio f series can get around 1:30. If I underclock it's i7 to 5% of maximum, turn off wireless and turn the screen down, I can get up to 4 hours.

Did you miss the days of dual 8 in floppy drives with a CPM operating system?

My laptop always has the AC adapter plugged in. Even if I take it somewhere with me, I hook it up to my power inverter behind the seat. Makes for a good MP3 player, if not a little difficult to operate while driving and of dubious legality.

Just a question, tech, but how much do you think performance would be affected by using a 10,000 RPM SATA III drive instead of a SSD? I've watched a few boot videos and the HDD only lagged a second or two behind (at least booting).
