Yeah, just saw on the News also. Although i am from Auckland (long away from Christchurch) i feel really bad for them, hence it's the second time a "big" earthquake has hit them, this year.

Quite sad really.

It was in Christchurch on the coast in the middle of the south island, still digging people out so they don't know how many have died. at school the told us that two busses were crushed and whole buildings have crumbled to the ground, which is a shock because the quake in september last year was larger but didn't do too much damage and there were no fatalities. Im in Auckland thats in the north island so i didn't feel a thing but my oldest sister lives there and she hasn't replied to any of our texts yet so i hope shes ok.

Might have something to do with the 4000+ aftershocks they've had since the first big one. Certainly can't of helped any.

I hope for the best re your sister Jamie.

@Gippeto thanks heard from my sister and shes fine.
just found out that the quake was only 5km deep and the one in september was 43km deep and thats why there is so much more damage this time. also the death count is upto 65 and there expecting it to get higher over night as they dig through the rubble

Yeah I'm up North so quite safe. My friend's brother is down there with his daughter. He said he ran home from work and saw at least 6 people dead, crushed, on his way. He was at work when it struck, his building collapsed and he climbed out from underneath all the rubble. So far the toll is at 65, will probably rise to around at least 200 judging by some reports.

Some of the video footage aired live down here was quite shocking, some of it they only replayed once or twice before it was removed from the feed so you have an idea of what it showed. Been glued to the TV for the last 6 hours now.

edit: Unconfirmed reports: 200-400 dead

I think what really sucks so bad about earthquakes is that you normally can't see them coming and by the time you realize what's going on, it's all ready happening. Makes finding cover hard.

My best wishes to all effected.

My condolences to all affected as well, I believe it was a 6.2 on the Richter Scale.

Now they're saying there's 75 confirmed dead with another 100 believed to be trapped, dead, inside the 'CTV' building which is completely level and has been on fire the last day or so. Those reports are unconfirmed though and are based on the list of missing people (which totals 300). Among those believed to be inside are a group of young Japanese students, apparently.

Thanks to the Aussies, British, Americans, Japanese and others for sending search and rescue teams and equipment our way :)

I saw the reports, that's just unfathomable, having a whole enterprise wiped out with a single stroke :? condolences to their loved ones
