Its not really powerfull but it's fun to play with. You can shoot a bb about 15 feet with it.
The project was more of a "can I really do it" deal.
Seeing that I can, I will now move on to bigger ones.

Sorry for being a total newb but what exactly is a coilgun? I see from reading it is battery powered but I am still clueless on home it fires/works.

It is a coil wrapped around a tube. When a current is passed through the coil, magnetism is created. The current only lasts for a fraction of a second. While it does last however, a ferrous (iron) object is pulled into the magnetic field. As soon as the coil shuts off, momentum takes over and the object keeps going.

Ok so the coil creates a magnet which pulls the bb then stops so it keeps on going which shoots it. That is pretty cool. It seems like it produces as much power as a mini bottle combustion. Is it automatic?

One it is a weak type of rail gun; two it uses capcitors not batteries; three
no they are not that strong; last but not least, yes they could be made automatic.

5 they are NOT railguns, though similar in concept.
Does any1 know of a way to make an EMP that you could hold in your hand and then swipe by a cell phone to fry it?
I wonder if this gun is actually screwing with the electronics near it.

Rail gun has rails Coil gun has barrel
Rail gun uses electronmagnets to fire so does the Coil gun
Bother use Capacitors, Induction coils,..ect to fire

They are completely different.
They both involve electricity and magnetism yes.
Coilguns create an attractive magnetic field in coils to pull a projectile forwards
Railguns create a repulsive magnetic field IN a projectile touching two rails to propel it forwards.
So a coilgun is not a weak type of railgun, in fact its not any type of railgun.
Railguns are naff anyway. The most powerful ones vapourise the sodding rails the projectile travels along because of the ridiculous heat and sparking caused on firing.
Coilguns can be fired repeatedly without trashing themselves as long as you let the coils cool down after each shot.

You need:
4 disposable cameras. Go get some used ones from the store.
Keep one circuit board and solder 4 capacitors in parallel
hook up a battery
Kinda hard to explain.. look around there's better info out there.

Rail guns pump electricity through one rail which causes a magnetic field along the length of the rail, then it goies through the ammo, which creates a perpindicular fiel, then back down the other coil making another magnetic field along that rail. When perpindicular magnetic fields come together they repel, this is called an Eddy current.
Coil guns only have one magnetic field, magnet pulls object then stops, ammo keeps going.
Thos are the main differences between coil and rail guns.
