I need a 6kVDC sorce at ~3 mA. I have 3 options, a flyback circuit, a 40kV laser power supply with a reduced input voltage, or a Neon Sign transformer. What is the best choice? The input voltage is not a problem and all are under 10 dollars. I need to know so I can go to the store. This is not for a spudgun.

No, this is for a marx geneator.

It is a scerise of capicitors, resistors, and spark gaps. It charges a certain number of HV capicitors to the input voltage. Then, once they are all charged, the power drops across the small spark gaps. You multiply the input voltage x the number of stages (in my case 30) to get the output voltage.

With my setup I should get 180kV out with 6kV input. The entire project is costing ~$50. The HV capicitors are only 5 cents a piece. They are running for $1.29 a piece on amaizing1.com.

Search for "quick and dirty marx generator" on google.

Amazing1.com is a fuckin ripoff (pardon my french). The prices are ~10-20 times as much as they are around here.
