Energetic smoke comp.

I just finished testing my new smoke composition. and MAN is it energetic! I stuck a piece of visco fuse into a baseball-sized lump and it burned for about 1 second with a bright read flame. A large mushroom cloud of smoke (about 10 feet across) rose about 40 feet into the air until dissipating...
Anyway, heres the "recipe" (for lack of a better word):

1/3 cup of KNO3

1/4 cup plain white sugar

1/2 cup of water


Extra materials:

Small pot

Spoon

Cookie sheet*

Non-stick cooking spray*

Rubber gloves*

Visco safety fuse*

*optional, but makes the job easier...

Synthesis:

1. Bring water to boil in the pot
2. Add your KNO3 and stir until completely dissolved
3. When the solution comes to a boil again, add sugar and stir until completely dissolved
4. Boil down until it becomes a white, pasty substance
5. Stir until it becomes a light peanut buttery color
6. Put onto greased cookie sheet and knead and shape with greased rubber gloves.
7. (Optional) Insert a piece of Visco fuse into the composition before it hardens.


The end result is well worth the time! (~10 mins)

Can't you mix the two powders for a less powerful smoke bomb without the risk of blowing up your kitchen?

A-98, I don't know about underwater, but KNO3 is definately an oxidiser.

F_S, the odds of accidental ignition are minimal, the only way for this stuff to accidently ignite is if it bubbles over, and you can prevent that with a bigger pot. I alway use a small pot but I have a very strong fan built into my stovetop that sucks away any bubble over ignition...

Energetic? This is a pretty tame smoke mix.
I wouldnt call anything that puts out less some than hexa/zinc comps energetic in the slightest

A tip though, black powder, 5-25% to taste, will increase burn speed, and make a much denser cloud of smoke.

I prolly should've metioned this before, but I meant it burns SUPER fast for a KNO3/sugar mix. When I use less KNO3, the mix burns slower and produces ridiculous amounts of smoke, even in small quantities.

I wish I had a ball mill... I have the chemicals to make 10-15 pounds of black powder, but I just dont have a mill... What I really want are just some good oxidizers, such as perchlorate, so I can make some flash powder.

Yes, and I can say that you certainly don't strike me as someone who should be making or using flash powder. 2km/s is pretty deadly.

Oh, believe me, I won't actually make the stuff, but I wish I could. The only real pyrotechnic device I have made is a simple blackpowder salute rocket. When I get older, I want to be a pyrotechnition and maybe even become a member of PGI. *sigh* Dreams, dreams...

I know MEK is methyl ethyl ketone, but is the P for peroxide, like AP?

couls you coat it in wax? or would that just melt and then expose the "bomb".

i dont know why im asking, but it would be pretty cool to burn one underwater.
