PVC is brittle (somewhat). I have made "devices" that I cannot speak of here and PVC does cause shrapnel. It causes a lot of shrapnel.

Crap I just waited a 24 hours for my tank to dry (small one) and I found out I f**ked the bikevalve up BY ACCEDENTLY PUTTING GLUE IN IT     Air goes in but goes out just as easy...

Gonna do it cleaner and full size now though... oh well, nothing can crush a spudder's spirit

You can modify a used propane tank to hold air if you feel like it. You just have to take the schrader valve(?) out of the top. Propane tanks are usually tested above 200 psi so you'll probably be safer than you would with a pvc tank.

You'll need to either get a tank thread adaptor or solder a pipe nipple onto the tank so you can hook it up
