This is an awesome site.
I'd like a little help from the collective minds.
I would like to build a cannon to shoot tennis balls for training in helping my son in goalie practice.
Big power is not needed.I can use air or fuel.
I'd like to incorporate a auto loader for these tennis balls to shoot out semi-fast.
I have all kinds PVC SHC. 40 pipe, valves, fittings from work not a problem with supply.I am thinking that the barrel will be 2.5 " PVC. would work with the tennis balls?
Like it be light so I can carry it & move around in front of the net from right to left.I am guessing I should be 25-30 feet away or closer from net area.
What I need is ideas on which way would be best for me to build this project.Power source, sizing, basic design ideas to get me started in a direction....hopefully close to the right direction.
Thanks for the membership. 8)

I should clarify when I say I like to incorporate an auto loader.
I think a bolt action type may be a little easier to build.
Then again someone may have a better idea on feeding the tennis balls.
I guess it depends on how fast the trigger or rate of fire would be?
Thanks again

Yes..erm back to the subject matter.
I would recommend that you build a piston actuated co-axial with a simple sliding breech loader. A quick connect and an air compressor and you are set.
One could probably achieve 6 shots a minute-not that fast but better than nothing.
Also you could design something similar to Clides golf ball gun.

Here is another question ......can a CO2 tank be used as power ?
Like those T-shirt launchers that are in use in areas.
Does any one know how much PSI in in those tanks ?
Thanks

Yes, there is more than 800psi in those tanks- unregulated you will blow your ass up.
If this is a first cannon, co2 is most probably too advanced for you.
There are lots of great air designs floating around, have a search.

Clides golf ball gun ? do you have a link to it to see.
Thanks for the idea, now i just need to look at plans on a piston actuated co-axial with a simple sliding breech loader.....now thats a mouth full... 8)

There is a cannon on here somewhere that a father built for Baseball practice for his son, so probably similar in what you would want as the velocity is not too high and it's simple and maneuverable.
It's blue, and shoots baseballs. That's all I can remember, good luck trying to find it on here, try searching 'baseball' or 'base' under Pneumatic Cannon Showcase.
BTW don't bother with a piston valve, you don't want to knock him out
I would say a 1.5" (if you can get your hands on a cheap one) sprinkler valve, over-under cannon design, 3" chamber 2' long, a tennis ball breech loader available from www.bcarms.com and 60psi, should do the trick.
And yeah CO2 tank will work. Make sure you have a regulator, about $75, but gives you portability, simplicity and quick filling times.

This is the link to my newest tennis ball barrel. i use the sprinkler flow control how far the diaphragm opens. the valve us an inch and a half piloted by a blowgun.
