Hell, my uncle snuck me a 9mm when I was 3 months old!



(If you haven't already guessed, this was a joke)

Make sure that the child you speak of doesn't go from happy to dead when he drops or bumps the cannon, as will inevitably occur. Oh and 9 years old is fine for a cannon assuming the kid isn't an absolute idiot.

before today i thought the kid was pretty responsible until when my dad and i went to their house he went ahead and threw a cat at me. (no really he picked up the poor cat and tried to chit me in the face). then he squeazed a juice box all over the floor because his mom had just finished cleaning up and he was mad. i changed my mind on the launcher, i just can't imagine how terrible i would feel if he hurt himself or someone else, with something i helped him make. thanks for all the input though. maybe just like someone suggested a small pill bottle combustion might be the way to go at least until he gets a little older.

You might also consider a marshmallow gun. Give'm the various hunks of PVC (couple elbows, a T or two, various lengths of 1/2" PVC) and let'm build his own gun. It doesn't have to be glued together so he can play around with the shape of the gun.

Only problem is the marshmallows all over the place...

A marshmellow gun is perfect. Pressure can't possibly get high enough to hurt. You also can't put heavier things in it with the hopes of hurting someone. But there is a certian magic about using something that doesn't require your energy; like going from a bike to a motocycle. You take a large step down the awesomness ladder by going from mechanical pneumatic to biopneumatic. But I like the idea of giving the kid a chance to shape his gun. Perhaps you could built a pneumatic with a resetable safety valve of some sort... or you could just use an aluminum foil burst disk pneumatic.

i like the idea too as i built him a marshmallow gun on the 26th of last month. but letting him build his own seems like a great idea thanks.

Have you considered building a woefully overpowered cannon for the mother? I'm thinking .50 cal lead balls...

For mothers, try Cillit BANG balls. Just like paintballs, but then with different filling.

Brain damage ... ..is still very much alive and well at age 9 and far beyond, finally clearing up somewhere between 18-25 (actually full frontal lobe development). A 9 yr old should still be supervised when building and using any gun, spud or otherwise.

Perfect example of the brain damage in action!! Also, it sounds like this kid could use a good firm spank on butt side.

The answer to one of those issues is to get a bigger cat.

9 is too young, even with supervision imo, thats grade 3 is it not? You shouldn't be showing these to kids like that. i would agree with a above and say grade 6 is a good age

Haha, the problem when i had them as a toddler, i had more fun eating the darn things than shooting them. Just not even then powerful enough for my tastes.. just lecture the kid until he can somewhat scare him to respect the cannon, and then he is by himself. nerf darts at 30 psi sound good, but unless he is monitored every time he shoots it, he will get curious of what it can do to someone eventually.
