So I'm going to try building a custom paintball gun in the near future. I'm going to try to make it very nice. Definitely going to be going with a pump, though I'm planning on it looking less like a pump, and more like a Springfield '03 bolt-action.
What do you guys think would be best, strip a cheap paintball gun and modify it for my own uses, or build from scratch?

i suggest you go to a custom gun store and by like a .30-06 system stock.
They my have dummy rifles at a military surplus. So, depending on the aesthetics you want, one of them would win.

That's probably what I'm going to do; buy a stock and slice it down the middle, carve out the innards and mount the system in there. I've already got some ideas for how to make certain things work. My biggest concern is regulating pressure, I need to figure out how they do it on paintball guns.

Probably a stupid idea, but have you considered a combustion? If you hook up a regulator to a bottle, you could probably get a pretty fast rate of fire (not of course like a real paintball gun) without having to worry about CO2. Just an idea.
Anyway, do you think you could build your own gun and somehow tap the regulator system from a storebought gun onto that?

I'm not doing combustion, I'm actually going to play real games with this. And I don't want a tank of propane to drag along. I already know it's going to be powered by 2, possibly 3 12-gram cartridges, and I know how I'm going to do that.
What I need is for someone who knows quite a bit about pumps to tell me what mechanisms are involved and how much space they take.
It can be done, I want to do it better.

I would say defiantly go with a remote tank on this one. Just get a 20 oz. with a palmer stabalizer reg, running into the gun.

No no, I'm not going remote. I'm going to run 2 or 3 12 grams at once. That'll give me plenty of shots. The idea here is to have everything self-contained.

I was thinking about this yesterday myself, although I was thinking about a magazine fed auto.
I'd realised that it would be possible to fit 24 paintballs and a 12 gram neatly inside a NATO Stanag magazine replica - and that's about as many paintballs as you can reasonably fire from a 12 gram if you're not too trigger heavy.
If you're already going pump, it makes some sense to go with a propane marker, because you can fire thousands of shots on an ounce of propane, which costs next to nothing.
On CO2, you might get around 50 shots from an ounce.

People use the propane powered (pump) Tippmann C3 in games.paiiyan wrote:I'm not doing combustion, I'm actually going to play real games with this. And I don't want a tank of propane to drag along.

Does that thing kinda look like a big cat to you?

I'll consider that, but are there propane tanks I can fit in the gun itself? I want the whole thing to be self-contained.

Haha, just kidding. Kinda freaky-lookin, tho. Sweet concept, love to see the final result.

Yea, I may end up having that emachines custom make a stock for me. That would be pretty sweet. I could make a few and sell them.

That's pretty sweet, though not quite what I'm going for. Thanks for the link though.

Well, I need to edit that post. I decided not to go AWP after all, haha. I'm gonna go for more of a Steyr look.
