I've looked for what people use besides 1 1/4" coupling and I'm wondering what you've found works best besides solid pvc lathed down.

really anything that fits and isn't to heavy. I've always thought of using a cast epoxy piston hollowed out

I've used plywood, MDF and a deodorant can:

Check out the How-To, link is somewhere on that page.

I'm pretty sure deodorant cans are a better fit, they also have a better surface as they're very smooth. Some deodorant cans wont fit, so best take a piece of 2" pipe with you to the store haha. :P

Taking around a piece of pipe checking everything for a fit is the best way. Just get the closest match and if the gap is still too big, you can always fall back on spudder's law #1:
Duct tape will fix everything! (Temporarily)

I hopefully fixed this, My dad is taking my 1 1/4 coupler to work and putting an O-ring groove in it with his lathe. It should be a perfect fit once the O-ring is in. He found an O-Ring set in the basement about 30 min ago with like 40 different types of O-rings 5 each. So many O-Rings.
