Alrighty, Im looking to build an IED simulator, but I am having trouble coming up with designs, any help is much appreciated.

Criteria:
-Remotely detonated
-Loud-ish
-Must be able to expell a large cloud of powder

I was thinking a (somehow) remotely detonated burst disk type thing that would shoot the powder out. It would help if this thing was loud enough to be heard over a car motor, whist driving, but having the powder visual would work on its own if having the loudness isnt possible.

My real trouble has been the remote detonation though, any ideas there?

Mobile phone -> detach wires from vibrator motor -> attach to detonator circuit -> thing that goes bang

Saw a thingy for a remote stungun using a mobile phone. Can't for the life of me remember why someone was doing it.

you could not mod a sprinkler valve and attach it to 27 volt and a walky talky or a trip wire your choice

Frankrede: Thats cool, but its not remotely detonated, and its expensive

Hotwired: That would be a great idea, but that would mean I have to take apart a cell phone that still gets service(IE: being paid for), which I dont want to do.

Twizi: thats sort of what I was thinking, but what part of the radio would I attack the activation wires too?

you could attach it to the speakers so when you talk it fires and put a 555 timer on it. there some one that did this with a cellphone i saw it the other day. but just attach it to the speaker it should work very well

or attach it to the vibrator moter like what hot wired said and do it with walkie talkies then you can have a whole bunch and have them on different freqencys then you can have a hole bunch and they would last for a long time

You could just get a prepaid cell phone. They cost about $15-25 US money, and all you would have to do is by a 10 minute card for it which would be another $10.

This would work just as well. I wasn't saying either idea was better, rather giving information on how to do something. It doesn't matter either way. I personally would go for whatever is cheapest.

i perfectely agree with you and u could make a burst disk but u would need to fire the pin remotly but it wouuld be prety hard unless your JSR but best of luck

Do you nessecarily need a pin to fire a burst disk? Cant I just pressurize a chamber on the other side of the sprinkler valve and but the burst disk on the other side, so when the valve opens, enough pressure is released to burst the disk?

I dont have too much expiriance with burst disks, is there a good tutorial/information page?

No you dont need a pin. What I would suggest is having a remote circuit hooked up to the sprinkler valve. depending on how large you wanna make this you can have different size air chambers. For the barrel I would put a union or coupling system of some kind for the burst disk.

When you activate the remote circuit it sets off the solenoid and fires teh sprinkler valve. The air pressure should then burst the burst disk. Realize the only reason you need the burst disk is for noise.

Why not get a cheap radio and reciever that is usually used in RC planes? Seeing as many people are moving to 2.4GHZ for their planes it shouldn't be too hard to pick one up second hand. Mount the rx, servo and battery pack inside the air chamber, with a nail attached to a servo. Put the burst disk in, pressurize and when you move the servo the disk will burst.

If you mount it all internally you should run the antenna through a hole in the chamber for better reception. The upside to it all being internal is that sealing it isn't a hassle. The downside is powder and debris will fall back onto the servo.

Using an RC radio seems like the easiest way as they arn't too costly and have very good range.
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges.

I'd use a cheap RC car. Then use the steer servo or the main motor to mechanically trigger a small valve.

i have used wireless detonation systems for ages now and the thing that worked best was a simple RC place transmitter and reciver where i hook the engine wires to a relay that opens for a capacitor to run into a coil and make a spark.

transmitter---->reciver---->relay---->capacitor---->coil---->bang

or you could simply hook the relay up to some 9v alkaline batteries and open a 2" springler with it.
