EDIT: Sorry man, I shouldn't have said that.
It may work, but I wouldn't trust it. Maybe instead of CO2, (Which would also be costly to launch) you could use 1 1/4 PVC with a burst disk. 1 1/4 fittings fit pretty good in 2 inch PVC.

I have thought about this before. I don't know if the co2 cartridge falling has enough force for the nail to pierce it. You could add weight if that was a problem. It would also get quite expensive since 12 gram cartridges are almost $1 a piece.

Edit: I type too slow.

Moonmaster: It isn't dumb it could work.

If the nail ruptured the fitting on the end, I don't know, you'd have a lot of blowby if the canister can accelerate down the barrel, but you'd also have a huge volume of air. Maybe in the 200-400 meter range?

thats pretty good i may try this but find a tight fit pvc pipe all it would take is a 2 ft pipe and a cap and a nail it would be cheap but expensive ammo-haha :D

In case it explodes, look into steel pipe, since you only need one piece it wouldn't be expensive.

Whether he is dumb or not, we as spudfiles members don't appreciate comments like that.

YOUR RUDE, PEOPLE EVER TELL YOU THAT?

Listen moonmaster, you have every right to your opinion but around here show some respect to your fellow Spudfiles members. You do not have the right to call other members names for any reason so don't do it again or I will either delete you post or edit it to make you look bad! Understand.

actually my uncle tried it once....it worked beutiffuly but he had to machine a nail not just use any random one from home depot. He told me they went about 350 meters

You are most definitely going to want to put some fins on the CO2 cart to stabilize it, otherwise it will tumble like crazy, and all of the CO2 that doesn't make it out while it is in the barrel will be ejected at random angles, not providing any useful thrust.
Additionally, turning the end of the CO2 cart into a sort of a De Laval nozzle would help your range a little bit.

I'm sorry colty-bear, and anyone else that may have been offended by that. I'm not even going to try to make an excuse because I hate it when people do that and won't own up to their faults. jrrdw, I don't think that will be necessary as it won't happen again.

I like this idea. I bet it would go really far. You even make a rifle with this setup. Just have the nail attached to a rubber band or something and pull it back somehow and BAM! You could make a semi-auto CO2 rifle!

Edit: Oh, about doing stupid stuff...I would have to take the cake for that one, hands down (lucky I still have them both). One day I made a dry ice bomb out of a GLASS bottle. Brilliant you say? Well why yes, properly brilliant in fact. Whats more is I held it up to my head, listening to the gasses hissing out under the extreme pressure, right next to my ear. I decided it was about time to set it down on the sidewalk and right as I was about to let go, BOOM! Right in my hand.
I did a quick finger check and walked in the house just in time to see the blood starting to drip from a couple nice nicks I received on my arm and thumb. Now THATS stupid, and lucky.
