moon bogg no offense but that was really stupid i think it also against fourm rules to talk about dry icebombs don't do it agian i want to see some more from the venom series
edit here are the rules
Explosive device: Any device that has the capability to release large amounts of stored energy rapidly.
Discussion of fireworks as projectiles is prohibited.
Discussion of "soda bottle bombs" or any other similar devices that may cause shrapnel as a result of uncontrolled rupture is prohibited

just drop in barrel

If the mortar round fits too snugly, it might not fall freely enough to fall fast enough to activate. A breech series of holes with a rubber flap "reed" valve can be used to solve this. A sudden burst of pressure will close the vent.

fins is a must i think cause if that thing flys out of the barrel sideways it could fly in that direction and seriously injury some one
no offense to anyone what this expermit is like shooting a gun upwards and if you do not have much property you could have the cops at your door step pretty quick

ps be very careful dont shoot your eye out

i already made one of these before, and if you use about 5ft of pipe it flies relatively wheres its pointing, the pipe gets very cold when you do this so be carful not to crack it

Darn.. The Hybrid burst disk, combustion, and most of the pneumatic forum just vaporized..

You should definitely make your own rounds and pressurize them your self, they might be a little more expensive ( I"m not sure about that ) but you could reuse them ( If you ever found them intact ) but great idea; I don't think you should weight it though, there are enough smart spudgunners on this site to figure out a way to get that projectile going fast to hit the nail

you could always use hpa tanks and and one of these
http://www.airforceairguns.com/handpump.html although they are expensive they will make up for their cost over co2 and still be very effective

a $200 air pump? jeeze...lol. WAY out of my budget.

30 odd years ago; The military dumped tons of these CO2 cartridges when the ones in life rafts and life vests expired. I used to get buckets of these. I tried shooting them like a mortar then. The barrel can't be too tight as the cartridege would slowly glide down against air pressure. When I got a larger diameter barrel, it was tough to make the nail hit in the correct location. A length of square tubing with an accurately placed "nail" would work well. I cant recall how well they flew but I know it was not a show stopper.

I have made a copper rifle (dubbed my .75 Cal) for firing specifically the 12 oz cartridges, however I used high pressure air I pumped in myself and the air was released to fire the cartridge via a piston valve. (Pictured below)

After firing quite a few full cartidges into solid walls and targets, all I can say is they have no balls. All they do is make a measly pop. I guess your going to use them as a self propelled projectile, but from my experience they don't pack much of a punch.

I would use other peoples suggestions of using a self contained PVC projectiles with an easier to pierce burst disc on the bottom. easy enough to fab and you can go larger bore with it as well.

Also dry ice bombs are so Passe, I hate when kids play with that shit anymore lol, precisely initiated high energetics is where it's at.

I agree. Attached is the result of an expanded metal screen getting in the way of a lime. :D

they can also go to 3000 psi there are not very many air pumps that can do that :o

Ifyou make the barrel tight fitting, you could probably hook up a vacuum chamber to the back to use to "suck" the cartridge down the barrel to the nail. It would be like a pneumatic cannon, just with the QEV backwards (QIV?). Although, if you're going to that much trouble, you might as well just make a regular cannon.

Maybe attached to the muzzle end of the barrel you could have a cage structure like 4 posts or something. Then have a rubber band or something attached in a way that lets you pull it back from behind and it launches it down the tube fast. It sounds strange but it would be pretty simple and cheap to do. Are you still persuing this for real?
