Quick Opening Valves?

what are some good quick opening valves that would be 2in and realatively cheap? If anyone has a modified sprinkler valve theyd be wiloing to sell?

well, it's hard to find 2" sprinkler valves, I'd suggest a piston valve.

Don't forget the home built diaphragm valves. They are quick too with a fast pilot. Some don't open as far as most pistons and with a slow pilot, may close early.

could you expound on both those valves, i looked at the wiki but im lost, see i went to the harware store *dumbass monet* and i asked for a piston valve, they asked me "what kind, for a car?"

I try to think that Monet was not a dumb ass.


Piston valves and diaphragm valves involve a piece that moves back and forth to seal and unseal the barrel.

There's a visual representation of a piston valve somewhere on here.

also, run a search or flip thru the how-to section on how to build a piston cannon. mr crowley has one on instructables somewhere

ok first of all piston valves are not going to be avalible at your hardware store. you will have to make your own or buy one from a site like launchpotatoes.com

secondly are you sure that you need that big of a valve? what kind of ammo do you want to shoot and what do you want it do to?

If this thread still doesnt help for piston valves (you have to make it, in case you were not sure) I would suggest going to the store (an irrigation store, not lowes or home depot) and buying a 2 inch sprinkler valve. Even a 1 inch sprinkler would pack a descent punch with those rockets.

That form covers barrel sealer valves. Some piston valves have the inlet and outlet reversed. The Supah valve is one example of this. These chamber sealing valves are noted for controlled opening so they are less likely to break. The trade off is they are slower than a QEV style barrel sealer. The opening speed is completely at the mercy of the pilot valve speed and flow.

That forum thread has the chamber sealer as well. The only difference is it is shown as filling from the pilot side and it has a face seal vs. the o-ring seal againgst the chamber side. Its the concept.

If he just went to a store looking for a "piston" valve, he probably doesnt want to mess around with machinng o-ring grooves yet.

How do you think a chamber sealing piston valve would perform if it was released mechanically without any resistance behind it at all? No pressure equalization and the piston housing could be a strong, well vented cage. What do you think?

Jack did a barrel sealer that was released mechanically. He stated it showed improved performance over an equivalent valve but the opening time on a proper piston valve with a powerful pilot is not slow by any means.

As for chamber sealing, I'm unsure.
