paintball mortar

Hello again,

I was wondering, as i am having a woodsball game of paintball with my friends in a few months, if mortar could be making a good weapon in paintball.

By mortar, its rather a shotgun that would shoot a buckshot of paintballs (10-12 paintballs) at an angle of 45 to 80 degrees, so its not a direct it but paintballs falling back to earth. Would it make the paintballs break? I would need to know what is the terminal velocity of a paintball then. I guess 200 fps would be sufficient.

The other round option would be a paint filled helium ballon with maybe some lube around it. But would it be legal or what would be its terminal velocity supposing its composed of water and 2 inches in diameter.
(here also the round would be fired from 45 to 80 degrees)

The main goal here is to make a safe weapon that meets paintball regulations.

I dont understand how can he shoot multiple times with that QEV and a sort of pushbutton.

( If its not to the website rules, then just consider the last question )

I want to make this sort of marker as i realised that paintball snipers are just a waste of time and the only way to get long range shooting is artillery (i love the feel of being in range of fire and not seen by "enemies" as i am too far)

typically, paintballers do a drop test on their paintballs before they use them in a serious game. IIRC, the height is less than 15 feet onto a hard surface.

You should be fine above maybe 50 feet.

I am not sure to completly understand what you have said...

Does anybody knows if the use of "bazooka" is permitted by most fields?

And, whats is the best, a buckshot of paintballs or a paint filled ballon? A paint filled ballon would be great as it would spread paint around.

It depends on your bore. In a 4 inch, I'd use a buckshot of crappy, old, cheap, deformed paint balls. In a 1.5" it'd be a balloon.

I have shot water balloons out of a friend's spray and pray, and been lethally accurate at ~20 degree angle out past 100 yards.

Actually, it used a lantern ignitor, and I was "Triggerman" as I was the only one able to operate it well. My friend aimed.

The only reason we missed was because the target moved. (travel time close to 3 seconds)

it's just a slide valve (it functions as a 3 way valve; normally air flows through it (fills the chamebr) but when he pulls it open the air source is cut off while the pilot side of the QEV is vented to the atmosphere)

you could use some external ballistics programme to simulate it (the best would be that spreadsheet based simulation created by rag or Joanna)
but I guess that you won't need it... I don't think there is any chance that the PBs will retain more than 30 m/s (having hard time imaging howfast is 30m/s? guess what... I've got the same problem with fps :D )

I still dont get it :scratch:

When you say air normally flows trough, from where to where ? The "pushbutton" is not connected to any air source, even if its filled from there.

How can the airsource be cut by the "pushbutton" when its isolated of the airchamber?

A little help would be great as that design is perfect for fast shooting. What about the consistency? I may need to use and air regulator.

I retain the 80 cc paint filled ballon solution as it would make for long range mild accurate shooting.
For the aiming system i have tough of a electronicaly controled shooting simulator with a rangefinder and angle indicator. I aim with the range finder (usually, they have a scope on them) the control circuit notes the range and angle of the target and tells you at what angle to point the mortar to ...

Even better would be a system that would enable me to "mark" the target away from the mortar, so that i could shoot without seeing the target or a teammate in a intense cqb could "request" an artillery strike while the mortar is hidden behind a hill ...

Do you know where these are available? I think I have the one by Joanna, but rag makes his sound so awesome. If he chooses to read this thread, I will remind him that he said he was working on making his acceptable for a public release.

The "pushbutton" is not connected to any air source
there is an air hose behind his hand...

Air enters the chamber and the piston closes, pressure builds inside the chamber.
When the pilot valve (blowgun, relief valve, qev, slide valve) opens the piston opens and the remaining pressure exits out the barrel.

I know ( i have already built piston valves ) but that design seemed revolutionary but he simply had a hose hidden by his hand.

What do you fire with your paintball mortars? Paint ballons or paintball buckshots ?

Do you have to problem of needing to lube the barrel with paint ballons as they tend to stick and rupture in the barrel?

Water balloons in dixie cups. Most of the time tennis balls (6+ to bombard a target) and bee-hives (pea stone - launched by the pound) for airsoft events. If there are tree limbs overhead. I can blow a hole through the tree canopy with 1-2 shots of stone, then launch tennis balls through it.
