Hi there from new Zealand.Im planning on building a baitlauncher using a modified sprinkler, ive got my eves on this one and just want to know if it can be modified (the piece in the middle seems odd)

I don't see why not. As long as you fully understand what you are doing, you can make almost any sprinkler valve work. I would need to see the inside before I could advise you further. Every brand of valve is a little different.
Rated to 150 psi. That's good.
They also come in 1 1/2" and 2". That's great.
They are a straight through type and that is also a plus. They have better flow.
I might order a 2" myself, just to try one out.
The knob on top is the flow control, it limits how far the diagram opens. You will likely remove it during modification.
Welcome to SpudFiles!

hey thanks for that,so its not too common then to have te centre bit then,Im torn between a spring loaded ball valve but ive read so many posts on this website of the better power release gained from a mod sprinkler, just don't want to buy one and not be able to mod it.
Pressure rated parts are really expensive over here as are sprinkler valves (this is the cheapest ive seen so far);

Between SpudFiles, Google and YouTube there are about a dozen "How To" videos out there. I'm sure you can find one with a valve that's close to your. If not I'm sure I could walk you through it if you post a photo of the inside of the lid and valve body.
Modifying a sprinkler valve should be way easier than making a spring loaded ball valve. My first one took me about 10 minute. It might take you an extra 2 minutes to remove the flow control.
Feel free to ask for help if you go for it. I'll keep an eye out for your post.

thanks im working on it.
I managed to score a 1 1/2" hunter sprinkler valve for 20$ and two 1 1/2" connectors for 2 $ (pn 18) which is so cheap for new Zealand.
Ive pulled it apart and its got a rod running down the centre for the flow control ,so need to watch a few more vids and threads to work out what to do.
Don't think I can post photos yet but I will when I can.

That's a good deal even over here in the States. A 11/2" valve will be like using two or three 1" valves in parallel. Should be very powerful. The performance will probably surprise you. Don't go overboard with the size of your pressure chamber. Any Chamber to barrel volume ratio( C/B) between one to one and two to one will work well. If you're using a hand pump/12 volt car pump I would keep the C/B closer to one to one.
Good luck

sounds good, powerful is what I am after.Im wanting to cast a 5 oz weight at least 200 m (220 yards).
the sprinkler isn't straight through , the flow goes up to the diafram then out.
So if I make a chamber about 35" out of 1 1/2" and the barrel about 45" out of 1 1/2" I should be in the money.
A lot of bait lau nchers ive seen on youtube have long as barrels which I understand lets all the air out so if this is the case I may not even need to mod the sprinkler ( I will mod it if its not to hard anyway).
I think I will make it straight through (no elbows) so keeping it simple.Ill only need to fire it about 6 or so times while out fishing.
Cant wait to get into it.....
This is such a cool site guys

my sprinkler has a guide rod held in place in conjunction with the flow control,so if I remove the flow control winder the rod has no way of centering...
Has anyone come across this set up?
I was thinking of leaving the flowcontrol and rod in place and allowing max flow with the adjuster and side venting for a blow valve.
Or would a long barrel in conjunction with solionoid venting be ok?

With an 1.5" valve solenoid piloting should probably still be ok, but you still won't get the power you will if you mod the valve.
I usually remove the guide rod or cut it off. Just make sure you seal the hole the epoxy.
I've seen a blowgun added off to one side and it should work, but I've never tried it myself.
If there are any bleed holes to the exit side of the valve be sure they are sealed with epoxy or the valve will not function properly. Some valves do some don't.
I pilot my sprinkler valves with a smaller sprinkler valve. Here is a 1" valve piloted by a 3/4" valve.
I hope this helps.

thanks.I am going to build it un modded and see how it goes for a start.
Today I bought 3 meters of pn12 pressure pipe and some pvc glue and a pressure rated end cap and two couplers for 70$.
Also got a bike valve rated to about 90 psi .
How many posts do I need to have before I can put a picture up?

No required amount that I know of for pictures. Did you try and get a error message of some kind? The 5 post minimum is to weed out spammers. Now that we know your here for spudding, you can now post freely.

I would not worry about the 90 psi rating of your bike valve. I've taken them close to 200 psi and others here have had them much much higher. I would take your Cannon to 120 psi and never think twice about it. You should get some good power even without modding the Valve.

so ive put it all together, found some pressure rated parts 2x45s and a 90 deg so the pressure now does a 180 deg turn.
wait ing for the glue to dry 24 hours.
1.4m long chamber and a 1.7m long barrel.
I wont need to put tape on the thread where the air leaves the valve will I?
Photos coming.

You should not need to use any tape on the barrel side of the valve. I've tried it both ways and could not tell any difference in performance.

Thanks so much, it will make it easier to transport with being able to screw the barrel on site with out shagging aroung with thread tape,
just hope its not going to take too long to pump up the 116 cubic inch chamber
