Why does no one make 12g co2 air guns/cannons?

Hey guys,

New to all this, but I'm surprised that this isn't a common source of propellant, especially with all of the quick change adapters available. Can anyone fill me in to why these designs are not more popular?

Hey,

it's mostly because they are so small and cost some money. Decent size spudgun would need one cartridge with every shot..

Like Matti said, a 12g CO2 cartridge on a spud gun would be like using one on a paintball gun.

Like I said. It is a dumb idea. The 12g is what, about 5% the volume of a standard paintball CO2 cylinder?

12gram would make for a very portable setup...but HOW much more portable than a 3.5 or 9 ounce tank? And then there's the cost factor to consider....12gram cartridges are THE most expensive way to purchase CO2. Paintball tanks are more affordable long term...bulk tanks are even cheaper...long term.

You typically get 30-40 shots from such a setup, it's silly compared to over 500 shots you'd get from a 12 oz tank but useful for some people who do military simulation and don't lay down a lot of fire (or used to be, most of them have moved to airsoft now) or who don't have access to bulk CO2.

You probably can't imagine how brutally expensive it is to design, manufacture and operate something of that size.
This one was $8.00 per shot.

I see what you guys mean with cost, but are you thinking in terms of single shot cannons, expelling all the force of the 12g in one swoop? I was thinking about using it for multiple (yet still few) shots, and taking advantage of the compact size & quick reload of CO2, generally for the purposes of paintball/airsoft game play.

Sure it can be done. I've considered an hybrid compressed air/CO2 design (where a CO2 cartridge is used as back up when main pressure dwindles) so to help regulation. It's highly convenient and (if your launcher isn't too large) powerful. But free atmospheric air is much cheaper and you're only require to expend energy on a pump. If you are really cheap you can even compress it by hand and forget about paying a gym!

CO2, on the other hand, isn't eco-friendly renewable energy ;-) . Another downside of CO2 (although not a big deal if you deliver it through a regulator) is that its pressure is dependent on temperature. If it gets cold, your launcher will be weaker. Usually it requires a expansion chamber which will get cold as more CO2 evaporates to fill in the chamber, thus you lose pressure unless you allow it to heat up. As I said, these downsides aren't a problem in small applications where you don't need much pressure or volume. Usually we, here, build tubes to launch potato sized objects which require hugh-mongous volume.

^^^ This.

Made a chart long ago by unloading an entire 12g CO2 cartridge with the PSI results vs Chamber size in cubic inches.
This is at 72 degrees. Hotter and psi goes up, colder and the psi drops.
