Hybrid

If you were to construct a cannon that was made of steel pipe or some other high pressure rated material and used a high pressure valve, and then charged it like a hybrid or just a simple propane cannon would you be able to control the pressure generated in the chamber? And Im sorry if this is in the wrong section but it kinda seemed to cover all three so I didnt know where to put it.

i have no idea what your asking. are you trying to make a pneumatic/combustion/hybrid or something?

hydrids dont use normal valves, they use burst disks.

Instead of a burst disk, like DR's test of the hybrid theory, he used a sprinkler valve to seal off the chamber and hold the pressure back. What I am asking is whether you could maintain that pressure and fire when needed. Is that plausible?

not really, i actually havent looked at DR's original hybrids :oops: so i wouldnt know. however, i dont think it would work because post combustion gasses shrink, so you would make a vacuum gun :D

Oh, yea that wouldnt be good, ok well thanks anyway. I just was day dreaming in class today and thought of that. Oh well on to new ideas. lol

Theoretically yes, if your chamber and valve could handle the extreme pressure spike. You'd need to use steel pipe or etc... but yes. Essentially what you're talking about is using a pressurized fuel/air mixture to pressurize a chamber to be used for a pneumatic shot. Right?

A-98 brings up a good point - after the combustion gases had cooled down, the pressure would go down accordingly. This might be possible to compensate for, though....

And yes, you could control how much pressure was generated by playing with the fuel/air/pressure mixture. However, you'd need to use a scuba tank or something similar for the chamber, and I don't even know of a valve that can handle that kind of pressure and pressure spike save for an industrial QEV or piston valve made from steel parts....

Thanks for the concern, but I think for now I am alas a poor student and cannot afford pretty metal parts etc. So I will settle for regular air cannons.

Go around to contractor hydraulic places and ask for hydraulic cylinders with broken shafts, busted couplers things like that, you could make a cannon out of that.

The pressure caused from a combustion or a hybrid which really is just a hybrid on roids is all caused from heat... heat goes up... so does the pressure... an instant later... heat goes away so does pressure

If you had a very sturdy metal cannon and a tough valve and absolutely no leaks, after combustion the gasses would reach their max pressure and drop as they cooled off.

I'm not sure where you got that information from, if you're using propane there is no way to get less pressure in the chamber post combustion because there are more moles of gas afterward. In fact, if you had everything sealed nice and purdy, the gas would pretty much maintain its pressure for a decent amount of time. But then, you just have pneumatic cannon, which can be achieved with high pressure nitrogen or CO2 :-P

But would this way last you longer than a similar sized C02 or nitro setup?
