Since I've been having a little fun with animations of late, here's a mechanically locked cartridge roughly to scale with a 3/8" projectile and a 1" outer diameter.

I also established that the force needed to actuate the mechanism is minimal, meaning only a weak firing pin on the launcher is needed and therefore it has a chance to eject the cartridge. Next step is certainly going to be a breech and barrel to establish ballistic performance and the potential to eject the cartridge.
