I know how they did it - but I'm not going to tell you either, because I'm evil.

That, and I want to build one, but my parents certainly wouldn't approve.
I don't think you really know. I bet it's one of the ideas that I thought of and threw out because it sounded stupid. I'd feel like an idiot then.

I assure you, I do know - but I'm sure that some n00b would read it and kill themselves, so I will remain quiet.

Private messages work wonders. I actually had a pretty good discussion with my chem teacher once and we came up with one theory, but we couldn't figure out how Archimedes would have contained the pressure till it built up. If I could just figure that part out I'd have it.

What if Archimedes used some sort of burst disk? maybe 2 peices of wood nailed/pegged togther and using a really thin leather/metal disk?

That actually is a good theory...

Thanks, I have been thinking about it since i watched that episode.

I was thinking he used some sort of a metal chamber with a lead sinker melted into the hole, and when he heated the chamber blam the lead melted.

I dont think steam would be enough heat to melt lead.

Lead has a really low melting point, around 600 K. (Since you payed tons of attention in chemistry, you'd know that's around 320 degrees celcius. )

HAHAHAHA!!!! yeah, but water boils at 212 degrees farenheight (100 degrees celsius(373 K)) see i didnt totally blow off that class

Yea smart one, but the fire is hotter than that. Just because water boils at 212, doesn't mean that the fire is 212. the fire is much hotter than that, hence, the metal is much hotter than that, since the metal is in contact with the lead, the lead melts.

But the boiling point also increases as pressure increases.

As for the MIT cannon I think I have an idea of what they did. Here is a tip (if my theory is right), take a look at their projectile and think about why they made it like that.

Joann, isn't this forum all about sharing?

All of us are curious, and if you are really concerened with saftey, PMing or instant messaging (AIM, MSN, etc..) people would still work.
