Are you putting the diaphragm in a union? If you are, it has to be the same size as your union.

Put it in a union (if you're not already) and make it the same size as the union so the diaphram will hold nicely in place a have a 100% seal.

DON'T put it in a union. Clearly, most of you have never made or used a diaphragm valve. A union adds cost and bulk to the cannon, and hinders performance. All you need is a female adapter and a male plug.
Get the female adapter, find the ID of it, and cut the disc about 1/8 bigger (1" ID, diaphragm should be 1 1/8" across). Make sure your barrel goes about halfway through the threads of the female adapter. Push the diaphragm in from the middle and go slowly, keeping it even on all sides. When you have it in 1 or 2 threads, screw in the male adapter with teflon tape and the exhaust sytem attached (a blowgun works fine in coaxials up to 2.5").
You're done!

I personally think a diaphram in a union is more idiot proof than the male-female adaptor diaphram; if I were an idiot (no offense) I would choose it over the other in terms of simplicity only.

A coaxial diaphragm cannon was my 2nd pneumatic, I got plans for the first online.

As the resident 'idiot', I say that getting a union adds maybe USD$0.75 to your project. whoop-dee-doo. In Worcester, I can find that on the street. However, If you have experience making cannons, (not me) definitely definitely (redundancy... definitely a sign of idiocy.) go for the male-female adaptors method. Now, time to resume my idiotdom. :confused2:

$.75?!?! I wish! That would make it so much easier for me to make huge hybgrids/burst disc guns. A 2" union in the Bay Area, at the cheapest, is $12-15. A female adapter is $2.99.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I laugh at you! In the Worcester Lowe's, right by Route 70. A 2" Sch.80 Pressure rated Union is like $4.00 The adaptors are even less! *laughs maniacally* (Remember, I may be wrong. I am a self-declared idiot)

Union or female adapter, who cares, this is like the difference between stunguns or ignition coils, both work and who cares.

If you use a female adapter, you don't need one.
