someone needs to make a saboted tungsten dart for their large-bore hybrid..........

seriously.

anyway, in relation to the fact the dowel didnt shatter, ive come to the concusion that the impact of stresses are lessened on projectiles severely. seeing as i can put a POTATO through plywood i think theres something holding the spud together. it would be a fun topic to look into. its almost like individual molecules bond tigher when hit at higher velocities.

I think it's simply got to do with velocity, you can cut steel with water if you shoot it fast enough. Besides, how intact is your potato after passing through the ply?

The SCTBDC can put a hole through an unknown amount of plywood (I've only tried up to 1") with a potato, but I've never found any more than a wet spot on the plywood left of the potato. I would agree that it is caused by sheer velocity; a 700 foot per second chunk of spud has a lot of energy, and it transfers enough of the energy to do some damage before it is turned into a cloud of starch.

Updated original post with ice slug video and picture of the slug disintegrating on impact with the target.

Just watched the video..... WOW! Thats some damn power you have there. May I suggest creating a spring loaded stand for it though. Then it wont fall off every time and it will reduce your recoil.
How much did the ice slug weigh?
Otherwise, that was beautiful!

Haha, but did the ice shatter once it went through the board? (I couldnt see it in the video  )

Judging by the lack of maternal outrage at any holes made in the structure behind the target, I'm guessing it did ;)

Has anyone ever seen the episode of Mythbusters where they tried to make a functioning bullet out of ice? Now we know that they just didn't have a big enough gun.

I need to make a stand sometime, but it will need to be good and sturdy to avoid being destroyed by the recoil. There may be a 3" bore, 1000 ci chamber combustion in the works, and the stand for it will be a priority.

The ice slug weighed 260 grams, and we never found any trace of it afterwards.

Tonight I will update with a video of the "broomstick" (to use Jack's terminology), that caused the original carnage. I'll probably set up a wood target about 4" thick, put up a strong backstop, and try to fire through the whole thing. It may not be as spectacular as the ice, due to the lack of a fragmenting projectile.

That or they were using rifles that generate in excess of 30,000 psi of hot gasses that leave your ice slug less likely to remain intact that when fired relatively slowly from an air cannon.

Well yeah, I know why it didn't work, but it could if it were fired from a large bore pneumatic rifle. That kind of goes against the myth though...

I like the ice slugs. And your ma is a whole lot more embracing of spudguns than mine.Mine adopts the "do I really need to know" policy.Whereas my dad is like cool! Just don't kill yourself.

About Myth busters,I quit watching them because a lot of the stuff they say can't be done can be done. They just aren't smart enough to do it properly.

Thats actually very true. They probably arent clever at all, but their personalities fit the job. The team they have are pretty talented though. And plus, Im pretty sure they dont think up the tests; thats what script writers and directors are for
