Wait hold on. If your putting a cleanout cap on you have to put an adapter on the back end. You could just drill into that and epxoy it there. Would look better that a tacky little piece of pipe.

Look in the botton of this picture. This is what i mean. You have to have one of these to screw in the endcap. Just put it in the adapter.

Thats what I thought of doing at first but I heard that weakens the end cap pretty badly and has caused the back end to explode. So would that be any less safe than putting it through the side?

I believe what you read was putting it directly into the end cap. Im soeaking of putting it into the slip part of the adapter that the cleanout cap screws into.

That would give you the double layer and still be safe.

Remember that anything inside the combustion chamber does not last forever. If you have anything with paint, or thin plastic, it will deteriorate very quickly. As for the great stuff (r), that will just burn on the first shot, guaranteed. Plus, epoxy is best, as I am sure you have heard.
