I'm making a sniper-type combustion atm and wanted to know how to make a simple silencer for under 15 bucks. Any suggestions?

i have never personaly made a silencer due to legal issues. for example a silencer for a pneumatic or hybrid works exactly the same as a silencer for a firearm and there are strict laws regarding that so common sense says... perhaps if the silencer device is permanently fixed to a spud type barrel so it could only be used for that and nothing else you could get around that. anyone know for sure? maybe it would depend on whatever lawyer you had lol. $15 is very resonable since even the best are pretty simple. the main concept is that the projectile produces very little sound unless it's moving more than roughly 1140 fps then youget that krrrrr cracking echo sound you hear after the bang of a typical rifle discharge. the gasses behind the projectile as it exits the barrel produce the bang. but the projectile flies straight and the gasses are blown to the sides in a short distance. by impedeing the gas or air by it striking a object and slowing it down to the point no bang is heard is the whole object here. the body of the silencer must be able to handle atleast the same pressure as the barrel. that tube needs to be fairly larger diameter than the barrel like atleast six times bigger. the best ones use several washers spaced apart to create chambers. the projectile flies through the hole in the washer and the gasses smack into each washer slowing them down. if you're using a smoothbore especialy it is a good idea to use washers much larger hole than the projectile but use two washers for each baffle and sandwich a piece of rubber in the middle with a hole even slightly smaller diameter than the projectile. make spacers out of another tube or roll up something to keep the washers in place. if you use the right diameter and enough baffles you won't hear anything at all. btw some professional ones use a cone shaped washer with the tip pointing inward towards the barrel. be careful, take your time

A muzzle brake added as an extension to the barrel (as opposed to just drilling holes in the muzzle) will not kill performance, but it won't make the launcher any quieter either, which is what I expect viskaren is trying to achieve.

There's plenty of advice for making a suppressor here, if it's for a combustion make sure you pack it with steel wool as this will help cool down the propelling gasses and therefore reduce pressure and noise.

Jack pretty much said it all... A muzzle brake in principle is nothing more then retro rockets...it reduces the kick of the gun not the noise...

I doubt that silencer for a spud gun it going to run into legality issues since a spud gun is not considered a firearm in most jurisdictions...

but a silencer is a NFA weapon itself.

http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/faq2.htm#m30
(M30) Are Paintball and/or Airgun Sound Suppressers NFA firearms? [Back]

The terms "firearm silencer" and "firearm muffler" mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

Numerous paintball and airgun silencers tested by ATF’s Firearms Technology Branch have been determined to be, by nature of their design and function, firearm silencers. Because silencers are NFA weapons, an individual wishing to manufacture or transfer such a silencer must receive prior approval from ATF and pay the required tax. See Questions M15 and 16 for application details.
If the ATF can somehow remove your spudgun silencer and use it to quiet any other firearm you could possibly get into trouble. Currently the ATF does not consider a spudgun a firearm, but they now offer to classify your spuddy.
(B17) How do I obtain a classification from ATF for my "potato gun?" [Back]

Any person desiring a classification of a “potato gun,” “spud gun” or similar device must submit a written request (not e-mail) to the Director and include a complete and accurate description of the device, the name and address of the manufacturer or importer, the purpose for which it is intended, and such photographs, diagrams, or drawings as may be necessary to make a classification. A final determination may require physical examination of the device. Such requests for classification should be submitted to: Bureau of ATF, Firearms Technology Branch.
If your spudder was a hybrid or shot hard projectiles or had a rifled barrel or was able to shoot lead of a firearm caliber they might classify it as something other than a 'potato gun'.

The fact that they are willing to classify spudders should also be an indication that they are on a thin line and could go either way - firearm or recreational.

Of course this only applies in the USA.

You could just get a longer barrel.Cut at the point where pressure internally almost falls back to 1 atm.

Not a cumbustion man myself, so where that point is, I couldn't tell you.

But that would leave it virtually silent.

The man certainly has a point, keeping the same chamber volume but fitting a longer barrel will not only give you better efficency and more power but also as a result, a quieter shot, without the complications - legal or otherwise - of a silencer

In most parts of australia a combustion spudgun is classed as a category E firearm... :(

Wow  I walked into the frying pan on that one....

You all brought up good points that I hadn't considered....however I stand my ground, in MOST jurisdictions within the United States that allow spud guns I highly doubt that you would get into significant trouble by building a silencer for your spud gun, given the spud gun is used in a responsible manner....I.E don't shoot any one with it while the silencer is on the gun...

....or just don't shoot people or animals...
If your spudder was a hybrid or shot hard projectiles or had a rifled barrel or was able to shoot lead of a firearm caliber they might classify it as something other than a 'potato gun'.
That sounds risky...if they label it as something else...say a firearm you could get into trouble for building it if you don't have a FFL.... but I'm not completely sure of all the laws... I would almost say its one of those things where it might be better if you don't ask for the classification...

I am constructing a silencer because of a neighbour complaining about hearing BOOM each time.
In this way the silencer will make me able to fire it in my backyard again with out causing annoyances.
Jurisdic it may be a wrong thing to build it a silencer but I think its just "social".

This is the attitude in most of Europe, where shooting without a silencer is considered to be "rude" to some extent. It's mostly in America that silencers are primarily associated with assasinations, a notion that is spreading thanks to Hollywood.

But you can't have it both ways either...the gun laws tend to be much more strict in europe...
