Aerosol can silencers are actually quite standard. I think that one of Chigurh, in No Country for Old Men used welded together aerosol cans.

no, for his pistol it is though. I read the book- it was an aerosol can with propane stove head things sweated inside it, and stuffed with fiberglass insulation

Yup yup! I am about half way through the book. Not nearly as good as the movie IMHO, but still quite good. The inaccuracy in the sound of the silenced shots really irritates me...

yea the weird noise they give silenced shots aggravated me as well, but if you manage to overlook that its quite good

Right, I haven't read the book - is a suppressed pistol featured in the movie, I don't remember it.

Also if I recall correctly the suppressed shotgun sound effects in the movie were still very audible so it was realistic in that respect.

well the pistol is featured in the movie- twice. First when he shoots at the crow on the bridge rail with it while driving by, then when Moss is running away from a hotel, I believe he shoots at him once or twice with it.

But it is in the movie.

And yes that is true that it was very audible- but I don't think the type of sound is correct. The way it sounds doesn't seem like a shotgun could make that type of sound.

Silencers CAN be legally obtained in the U.S. by certain types of corporations, or with certain private citizen licenses. I've fired a legally owned silenced Walther .22 at a public range, with the Range Master watching over my shoulder. The owner had his tax-stamp with him.

A silencer on a supersonic firearm is not as effective as on a subsonic one, but it's not a waste of time either, it does reduce the muzzle crack and help to conceal the location of the shooter.

Incidentally the shotgun in the video is made by Hushpower, an established manufacturer.

WRONG. First of all, you're using the wrong word. It's more properly called a suppressor, and it's meant to CHANGE the sound of a shot, not eliminate it entirely. A suppressor used on a supersonic shot won't be near as quiet, true, but what would normally be a loud, flat, CRACK, might instead be a quieter, and less easily recognized "ppppzzzzzzzzsnap". A fully suppressed .308 might sound like an unsilenced .22, and it would be almost impossible to locate the shooter by ear. Of course, suppressing a shot hurts the accuracy badly, but you don't use suppressors for long-range shooting anyways.

A good suppressor will actually increase accuracy, because it reduces the amount of turbulence that disturbs the flight of the bullet after it has left the muzzle.

We normally associate suppressed weapons with short ranges because of the nature of subsonic bullets which are hard to shoot accurately at long range (though for example the 510 whisper pictured on the right is accurate out to 600 metres), but there is no reason why a properly fitted suppressor should affect accuracy.

Seriously, if you are trying to kill someone quietly, a far better approach would be to hit them in the back of the head with the maglite, and then look for an escape rout with the flashlight...
