Hammer valve but with a catch to hold it open could work or burst disc that is punctured by the back of the round.

No ways for a combustion to do it?

A snap trap trigger in it with a strike anywhere kitchen match would ignite a combustion. A cap gun cap may also work as an ignition source, though I have not tried it. A charged photo flash capacitor that is shorted by the round is another inexpensive ignition possibility. Take one from a disposable camera. It includes a free charging circuit.
A 9 volt battery in the bottom and a little steel wool on the round is another way to generate ignition.

Use your imagination. Create a spark when the round makes contact with the bottom. Do you need spoon fed another half dozen ideas?

... or a combustion mix in the tail of the projectile, with built in electrodes that touch contacts at the base of the mortat tube connected to the ignition sistem.

I'm going to try to whip up some shells and try it out. Hopefully I got some material to make the shells.

still trying to figure out what size the shell should be, so it can hold its fuel and at the same time still fly a good distance.

I would say 2" PVC would be quite good

The enery needed to launch a morter size projectile would have to be like 2000 joules or somthing - Like a 450v 30000uf capasitor or proberbly more :V Thats enough to kill you 100s of times over. One wong move and you would be a chared dead human

Not to mention how manny big ass batterys you would go through

so I've come up with this

Image[/URL]

I'll put some weight in the top of the shell to give it the power needed to drop and then to fly some distance.
The shell would be made from the top of a water bottle attached to a slightly smaller pvc body maybe, and then some sort of cone. Not sure how I will do it because I have such limited resources right now.

Your design may work, but there are obvious problems, the main one being the alignment of the terminals.

A while back, I proposed a theory on the same concept. Here is a picture:
Image

This trigger design worked by dropping the projectile into the barrel. The weight of the projectile pushed the inner wire back. Once the inner wire made contact, the circuit was complete and the valve fired. And it worked out great. The launcher itself didn't produce the range I sought after, so I dismissed the idea (it was to be used as a mortar for paintball, operating an electronically fired sprinkler valve).

Since the trigger design did work for mine, however, it should work for a combustion fired launcher, and probably to better effect. If you could come up with a way of auto-filling and venting the chamber, then you will have the combustion fired mortar you seek.

Good luck.

Why not just use a burst disc and a pointy-stabby thing on the base of the projectile? It's been done before.
