More noob questions

Hey i just thought of something since Hybrid cannons need pressuried air and propane to make it work why dont they use pressurised pure
oxygen.

just a thought would be a oxygen and propane ratio meter and if some one did use pure oxygen to pressurise their hydrid would they a heavy

duty pressure rated tube so if the feul mix does sucessfully detonate it wont burst at the sides.

sorry there a 3 questions

1. is it possible to use a pure oxygen and propane mix in a hybrid cannon

2. what ratio of oxygen and propane would need to achived for it to detonate.

3. what type of material would be most suitible for the job

1) Yes

2) I'm not really sure, but it can probably be dug up around here somewhere. It has been discussed several times before.

3) nothing. It is not recommended, especially for someone who has never built a hybrid before.

oh im planniing on building one :lol: i was just thinking using pure oxygen might give it more power and making what ever it is your shooting go further and seeing what other members would say

1. Of course it's possible. However, using an oxygen-enriched mixture also increases combustion temperature and flame front velocity, which will indeed increase power, but it's also extremely dangerous unless you've built a combustion vessel that can handle this kind of extreme repeated pressure spike.

2. Propane's upper and lower explosive limits are much more forgiving in oxygen - I'd bet that anything from a 2% to 60%+ mixture would ignite. If your question is what would be the most efficient, I believe it's 5 parts oxygen to 1 part propane by volume.

3. Schedule 80 welded steel comes to mind. A gas cylinder rated for 3000+ psi could be converted to a nice combustion chamber if one had the tools and resources available. I'd consider modifying an old hydraulic ram cylinder or something like that, too.

4. I know others have probably told you this but PLEASE, not just for your own safety but for the reputation of the spudgun community (we HATE hearing about spudgun accidents on the news), PLEASE build a few non-hybrid cannons and really research your $hi7 throughly before you build a hybrid.

Oxygen as the oxidizer would be very very dangerous if you were using this with a closed pressurized system for a few different reasons.

1. Oxygen is such a good oxidizer it can oxidize materials not typically considered spontaneous;y combustible. For this reason when installing an O2 regulator you must clean both sets of threads to make sure there is no oil and you cannot use thread tape on them. If you were to used galvanized pipe for your metering system you would not be able to use thread tape or anything to seal it up, therefore you would have a meter that potentially leaks (unless you weld the joints) or one that spontaneously detonates.

2. For me there is a possibility that if you pressurized your fuel/air mixture to a high enough pressure it may spontaneously detonate when you may not be ready. Now I know for a fact that acetylene detonates above 15 psi, but I believe that under certain circumstances that O2 can do the same thing.

3. There is a reason I have been using the word detonate. In a pure O2 environment whatever fuel get's ignited would do so with such force that it would probably blow the whole thing to bits.

Overall, I just think that using something like that would be very dangerous.

i do agree it very dangerous to deal with a very conbustible mix and with all the safety measures i think im better of with normal large combustion cannons . thanks for all the warnings too but i could never afford to buy steel cylinders.

I do know for a fact that a normal pressure spike from a hairspray is 300 psi bubba05 told me this cus he is my neighbour .

i have only one cannon now i only regularly shoot socks about 60m +.
Im only really new to spud guns, spudzookas what ever you want to call them so PLZ give me what i need to know about these fir arms.

PS: spud guns classified fire arms arent they.

I think I smell the BS on that 300 psi bit.

Build you an advanced combustion and get it to work right. Have fun with it, then contemplate a hybrid. You don't have to use pure oxygen. I charge mine with a bike pump.
