Here's a good readat Wikipedia on series and parallel circuits.

In series, the gaps would be daisy chained, end on end to each other, the first gap connected to one side of the spark source, the tail of the last gap connected to the other side of the spark source.

only problem i can see is the PVC tube on the inside being affected by the heat?

Nah it should be fine. The heat spike is only for a few milliseconds. The HIS design will be a little complex to replicate but should be reliable if you can put the time into it.

some experience i have on hybrids is that the heat is no problem until your chamber is getting really big.

my small hybrid did not burn tape on 6x while my big hybrid melts aluminium at 3x.

spark strips in small hybrids is not a big deal since you can use heat shrinking tube to connect welding rods together and have the spark jump inside of them.
