because they like the 2mm steel was against the profile!

I love the nice clean hole it made. I imagine if you tapered the tungsten it would just knife through thicker steel (not that it doesn't do that already, I'm sure).

This is just as good as spending the entire morning tromping around in the woods! Excellent work Petitlu! :D

Thank you! I appreciate
I have not succeeded in making a point of tungsten carbide ... :?

... but so what, it worked!

I note the eBay seller offers various sizes or carbide rod, it might be interesting to make a dart with a streamlined brass or mild steel sheath with a smaller diameter carbide core.

Or just get tungsten rods instead, cheaper and easier to grind/cut and still much harder than steel.

A longer range shot would also be quite impressive ;)

Yes it worked, and very well! :D

With a point, the hole would be different.
The next shot, I will put the steel profile profile as thou hast said.
I think the sabot is sufficient.
darts for more complex, they must pull to see 100m for efficacy.

I'll do another shooting test with 8mm ball, a shot with tungsten and then stop testing.
I will make the Thorjack, it will be a rifle scope and I can shoot at longer distances.
I have lots of arrows too! :D

Definitely something I have to look into myself :) Something likethiscould also be useful, used as-is.

Are you using a Shakespearean translator :D

The first penetration will strip off the fins, but there is relatively little distance between the flanges so not that much room to tumble. are the flanges the same thickness as the web?
I'll do another shooting test with 8mm ball
It would be interesting to see if this will penetrate, the ball will certainly be deformed but it will have a lot of velocity and just might make it through :)
a shot with tungsten
Please put plenty of stuff behind the beam to make sure you catch the penetrator :)

I can't believe this thread has made it so long without mentioning this sketch:

Please be careful with the 8mm ball, that could potentially bounce back quite some distance.

Haha, I did chuckle at the translation.

I have been tempted by those conical burrs :)

Ah I always like a bit of Monty Python :D

the flanges are thicker, 10mm
I'll try to retrieve the rod
distorted the ball? it is steel, it will certainly ricochet away but I will!
I also have steel balls of 12mm ...
sorry for the translation "X"
:D

balls of steel ball bearings?

I purchased them as 3/8" slingshot ammunition so presumably they're not made of high grade steel.

I have balls of 12mm ball bearing, terrible test!
my 8mm are low quality

Perhaps if you're lucky, you could get ahold of some pulled armor piercing(AP) bullets. They have a tungsten carbide core that is already pointed. I'm thinking that since you're using 8mm steel bearings you could look for some pulled 8mm AP bullets, probably a lot more popular in Europe than .30 cal bullets. Of course, I know nothing about the availability or legality of pulled AP bullets in Europe either, it seems to be fairly common here in the US.
Wikipedia wrote:SmK-Geschoß - Spitzgeschoß mit Kern ("Spitzer with Core")—steel cored projectile for use against targets behind thick covers, tanks, or airplanes. Red circular cap groove, yellow bullet. There was also a version with a black projectile which had a tungsten carbide instead of a steel core.

German Spitzgeschoss mit Kern armor-piercing bullets were also very good, being very stable and accurate at long ranges.[14] The most common type of armor-piercing round had a hardened-steel core with plated-steel jacket and weighed 11.5 grams (177 gr). Other types appeared which used tungsten carbide and combinations for cores. Sintered iron and mild steel cores also came into use in ball ammunition.
If you're going to fire ThorJack at long range, I think a bullet might be the way to go. Of course you would need to get it up to supersonic speeds for the bullet to work the way it's designed.

Getting ahold of AP ammo is probably not a realistic option, but I just thought I'd throw it out as something to think about.
