Hey guys, I decided that I wanted to make some motion detection mines for the use of Airsoft.

The plan is as follows, The Glade motion sensor circuit from the Glade Sense and Scent product found here, will be used to detect motion of enemy troops. Once the sensor detects the movement, it sends an electric signal to a relay. The relay acts as a switch to allow higher voltage (18v) to activate a sprinkler valve.


I picked up two of the Glade Sense and Scent products the other day at walgreens. When I went they were already on sale for $7.99 each (good price), Then I see that they has a manufacturers coupon for $4 off. So then they were $3.99 each. I also had a coupon that I printed off of Glades website which is buy one get one free.. so they stacked the coupon with the other coupon and I got 2 Glade sense and scents for $3.99. ($2 each)

Anyways, So far I have taken 1 apart and I found out the circuit that comes with the device is already hooked up to a motor operating at 4 volts. The Relay will go in-place of the motor.

Now I havnt purchased the relay yet. The output voltage on the circuit is 4 volts, I need the relay to be able to accept the 4 volts to activate and I need the relay to be able to handle up to 18v or 24v if possible. If you have any suggestions please let me know.




Now there are some problems with this circuit. It detects differences in light, so if the movement doesn't cast a shadow on the unit; it will not go off. I have found a quick fix to this issue by shining a flashlight not directly at the unit but a little off to the side.

Another thing is that this device once turned on doesnt actually activate the motion sensor for 30 minutes. After the 30 minutes is up the device automatically turns on the motion sensing and therefore you have to pre-turn on the device atleast 30 minutes before you plan to use it. It also raises the concern that if you dont place it down before the 30 minutes is up it will go off on your self. I have found a quick fix for that issue. 1 peice of electric tape to cover the sensor. once the motion sensor is active it will not go off with the tape over it. You can quickly pull the tape off once you are ready to set the device down and it will not go off.


The other problem with the circuit is that the thing they call "Motion Sensor Override button" Actually activates the device(sends electric signal) and resets the time before motion sensing can become active again to 30 minutes.

Now these are obviously some pretty bad issues with the device but as long as yo use the electric tape fix all you have to worry about is turning on the device (put in batteries) 30 minutes before the match (put in batteries and tape in pre-match warmup).

The valve used for firing will be a sprinkler valve with the stock solenoid.
Chamber and barrel size will be small and compact because this thing only needs to fire, BB's, Flour, or Paint.

You might try if it responds to infra red light, if so, you can build an "invisible" replacement for the flashlight. As for the relay, I don't know where you are going to buy it(or are able to), but I would just go to a local electronics shop and ask for one that need 4V on the primary side

I would buy a transistor, because they're probably a bit cheaper(and switch faster)

What is the motion sensor originally used for? Burglar detecting? Why does it have a motor?

You could also have left the motor in, and that when it turned, it just activated a switch or made contact between two wires.

the motion sensor is used in the GLADE motion sensing sprayer.. its used that when people walk out of a bathroom after dropping one.. it will spray as they walk by.

Yes but the voltage on the circuit is only 4 volts and that is clearly not high enough for the solenoid. And a relay is just a switch in a sense.. its just a little box looking thing thats really tiny that does the same thing you mentioned. when the motion sensor goes off it activates a switch that allows another circuit to be turned on.

Ah lol, so its a crapdetector?

And what about using the 4 volts to power an electric motor, which is used to make contact between two wires, or push in a switch?

As for your problems with not being able to actuate a relay, I recommend a High-gain Darlington power transistor.

Parralax PIR Motion Detector

Its a Motion detector that goes for 10 bucks or so. I have about 10 of them. They're wicked easy to hook up.... Simply apply power and the output goes high when someone walks within the field of vision. (it has a WIDE field of vision, but nothing a little black-painted PVC cant fix eh?)

6v DC relay

The description says 6v relay, so see if you can't add a bit more voltage to your circuit and use those.

EDIT: Check the continuity between the wires of the motor wires. If it registers as 0 when the motor is off, hook up another ~2v battery and that should trigger the 6v relay.

ahh i was looking for a PIR motion detector for cheap...

Ohwell if this doesnt work out then I'll pick up a PIR motion detector...

that one that you linked.. do you think the output voltage is high enough to trigger a relay or a power transistor? I'd need it to somehow get 18 or 24v to power a solenoid.

I need something higher then 9v on the other end though.. I need 24v or 18 minimum.
