So there I was, trying out my latest HPA BBMG idea, when BANG!

The thing basically flew to pieces due to an overpressure in the chamber. I was asking for it, there was too much unsupported epoxy so this sort of failure was to be expected, but your ingenious scribe decided to proceed anyway. Thankfully none of the flying debris hit me, it could have been much worse.

These are the bits I managed to recover, there's about 40% of it missing and I gave up looking after half an hour

remember kids you always have to support your epoxy bbmg when putting 850psi through it or it may catastrophically fail

Did you ever think of glueing in some carbon fibre? It can resist massive tractive forces and in case of a failure there wouldn't be any/much shrapnels.

now I am happy that my experiment with resins failed before I could pressurise it

Ouch... it seems epoxy isn't as strong as you thought...
Did you record any of that? (Or were you out of batteries...)

At least you took it to the limit.

Or you need to encase it in a piece of metal pipe and fill it up completely..

You might wanna reconsider your trust in the strenght of epoxy now..

I wouldn't feel safe with iron fittings at 850 psi.. so yeah it was a bit dumb

Sadly I have no footage of the event (and let's face it, if I did it would just have sounded like a massive Laz0r!). The breech was attached to my pressure washer/paintball tank setup and thankfully I was pointing it well away from me, the shrapnel mostly spread out in a arc ahead of me, except for the stainless steel chamber which judging by the dent in the ceiling shot straight up, but I still can't find it :-/

That was my mistake, the epoxy is strong enough (looks at all my other HPA projects that didn't blow up ) but it needs to be supported, in this case I had an unsupported area that was literally pulled apart by the pressure. This is why it took me so long to invest in a paintball tank, I knew I'd do something stupid sooner or later

In a nutshell, remember kids, if you're using unrated construction at silly pressures, you're doing so at your own risk.

On a more serious note, glad to hear you survived. It always seems that it takes a reminder of things going wrong around here once in a while to keep people thinking safe.

I don't think it would have killed me, I wasn't exactly pulling shrapnel out of the furniture... or maybe that's where the parts I can't find ended up

Agreed though, these incidents are a poignant reminder of the forces which we play with and how safety is of paramount importance.
