Gears as propulsion? (kinda random)

Ok so when you pull the trigger, it turns a big partial gear. this gear gets to a point, then releases the bolt, propelling the bb forward. the partial gear is spring loaded , so it resets into place for the next shot. This isn't something i've seen before, and i don't have a way to make this so i'd like to see someone here make this.

Thats called the mechanism inside an airsoft AEG (Automatic Electric Gun).

Not worth making it by hand, you can buy the internals for an AEG and make some other body kit for it but why try to replicate such a fiddly thing?

i think it'd just be cool to have an airsoft gun that doesnt need batteries or gas or you need to cock it every time

it wont work without batteries or gas, it simply wont. it will loose a little power each shot. maybe if you spent a few weeks reseaching and about $1000 and countless hours in a metal shop, you might be able to get it to fire two or three shots before you had to cock it again.[/i]

What?

So you'd like to get all the power to fire the BB by the force you put in pulling the trigger?

Well you could but two things:

A) the trigger would have to move relatively far to compress the spring all by itself

B) your trigger finger would not appreciate that it has to do so much work for each shot - at least in pistols that need to be cocked the cocking work is done by a whole hand which is much less strenuous than doing it with one finger.

Why not just build a gun that runs on a premade cartidge? Like a real gun? *gasp*

You people should be ashamed. Even if the technology exists just state that and dont criticize him for being interested in the workings of something and wishing to make it on his own. He may end up making a revolutionary technology. To mysterymeat, dont be discouraged by these people, I'd say exploe it as much as possible, you never know what youll find. I was thinking that you could use a wind up set up to turn the gear. So go out and try it. Good Luck Spud

Why? He proposed an idea and people gave him advice. Granted the advice didnt say to go ahead and make it, but it gave a realistic look on the project and saved him a lot of misery if he did try tot make it.

mainly i was talking about hi's post that seemed sort of derogatory and degrading

Maybe a clock maker could figure out how to make this. The ancient Greeks made carts and other things that ran on spring propulsion, why can't we?
