The exact performance of .50 BMG, like all rounds, will vary depending on the rifle and bullet mass, but between 11,000 - 12,000 ft-lbs and 2700-3100 fps would be a reasonable range for guesses.
This should be able to equal, or perhaps even beat either of those.

From what is a relatively small sized cannon for the spudding world, that's impressive.

one thing is bad with Larda.. you can't say anything about his guns but "awesome" since there it nothing that could be improved!

once more, great work!

To the engineer, anything - with just one partial exception, the wheel - can be improved.

I looked on Wikipedia, it says that a .50 cal shoots 853 m/s with a 42.8g. projectile, that means this beast is faster than a .50 cal.

Awesome work, this is my new favorite cannon :D

Holy fucking shit.

I'm really going to have to built me one of these hybrid contraptions!

Makes you wonder why the military doesn't pick up on this kind of deal, if only for launching practice shells. You would think that it would be cheaper than powder.
Ever heard of a CLGG? It's essentially a high mix hybrid burning a light gas like hydrogen or methane that's being researched for long range shooting (one of them is able to hit a 5 metre square target at 100 miles apparently). They've currently got them over 4km/s, well past what a powder burning gun can achieve. Other than the higher muzzle speeds that can be achieved though, there's really no advantage of gas mixes over powders, and I imagine that the CLGGs must be running at the equivalent of several hundred x to produce the results that they do.

The next step for this cannon is to get it running on a lighter gas, but I'm sure it can achieve 1km/s now - if by nothing other than shear brute force, not unlike how the Airforce Condor can break Mach 1 with room temperature air.
It was only the other month we were excited about DYI's 20x cannon.
Funny thing is, I only held that record for a few days. Larda was testing it at 40x oxy/propane just about a week after my first 20x shots. I believe it'll be a while before anyone else reaches these kinds of mixes, but it's nice to see that spudguns are beginning to approach the energy density of conventional firearms (surpassing it in some cases, as most shotguns and pistols don't reach the chamber pressure that this thing does).

 oh my god. That is f***ing awesome I think we found someone to build DYI's DDT gun...
And there I was *thinking* that *maybe* I would hold the muzzle energy record, at least until the pipe dream gets built. :crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:
As for improvements, run it on MAPP, and shoot depleated uranium ammo.

BTW, what is the bore size?

I hope you can find some depleated uranium somewhere.

Speaking of which, anyone know whats up with the PD?

Seriously, I can't close my jaw.

And I've run out of expletives.

In terms of comparison to "real" firearms, a comprehensive list of cartridges can be found here.

With the slug at 933m/s, it's roughly double the muzzle energy of a full power NATO 7.62mm rifle round or magnum 12 bore shotgun slug, it would be considered adequate for large game in Africa

*finds more expletives*

Any velocity and weight data for the heavier slugs?

Yeah but the double edged sword is if these things started becoming more common place, governments would start noticing and would most assuredly ban them, or at best, require them to be licensed. As jaw droppingly awesome as this is, I see it note worthy only as an academic exercise and not one that should be or needs to be repeated very often by "spud gunners".

Having said that... Dang...this thing is impressive...and no one has mentioned the really cool gas recoil system.

I have a question..

Wich one is more powerful? the Electro thermal gun? or perhaps the hybrid...

kablooie wrote::shock: That is amazing. Congratulations, I peed my pants a little bit when I saw that steel damage shot. Very cool, your machining is incredible.

P.S. Don't look down the barrel (that thing could take your eye out).

Dude, you are way underestimating the power of this gun. If you look down the barrel when it was loaded, and it fired, It would make your whole head literally dissapear.

Larda, I have so much respect for your work. It takes an extreemly smart person to build a monster like that. I wouldnt be surprised if you showed this gunto the military and they used your idea.

I was talking to my friend last night about why spudfiles is a good forum. And he said that those cannons are weak. Then I said something that was probably true. "Dude, if all of the people on spudfiles got together with all of their cannons, we could take over china".
And now I think that just Larda's Hybrid could do the job
