Marble Mortar idea

Hey all,

Ive had an idea for a marble mortar. Here is a diagram of the setup:

Image

Basically the fuel is butane injection and the ignition is a disposable camera. The camera is triggered by the marble pushing two electrodes together to form the spark which in turn ignites the butane.

To fire you pull the pin at the top of the barrel or you could just drop it in like a regular mortar.

As soon as i can get this camera ignition to work (having no luck so help would be good) i will attempt this if you cannot spot any problems.

The only dimensions i know id the OD diameter of the "barrel" which is 15mm. The rest can be worked out via the supposed 'perfect' C:B ratio, on which i also need help.

You will have to open the image to view properly

NOTE: also posted on combustion discussion as did not know where to put it. MODS feel free to move/delete as required.

okay it would work but why would you want a mortar, I'd just recomend tilting the spring stuff up at an angle, is this work some green army men battle renactment

it wouldn't be very strong without a bigger chammber

yea i dont care much for strength i just want something that works like a mortar kinda and can shoot a marble a bit

As the marble compresses the air on the air down, you could also have a hybrid effect of sorts :D

so what kind of power could it produce, is it worth it?

EDIT: i mean i can get the pipe for free, endcap for a buck, camera for free allreday got butane lighter, all ready got marbles so yea.

not really not even enough to use a 1.5mix, thats a joke

I'd geuss but you'd get the power of a springloaded toy with less reliability make sure you have a safe and easy way of unloading marbles,

also I just remembered that the marbles are like a a perfect fit in 1/2"pvc really perfect but inside diameter of pvc varies from manufactures so it doesn't roll around much, if its too tight try AA batteries

Or you could make an air powered version, which would give you a more consistent and powerful gun.

yes im working on an air version aswell but that was my secret shhh!

ok i was going to have a triggered burst dist using 15mm pipe and 2 unions. A battery wiuld have a pin on its butt end which would pierce the 1st disk thus reducing pressure thus bursting second.

Care to explain how a drop in pressure will burst the disk?

it will use the trigered burst disk system. between two burst disks there will be a pressure of say 50psi and in the chamber there will be 100psi lets say the disk breaks at 75psi. The drop in air from between the disks pus more strain on the second disk causing it to break thus proppeling the ammo.

hope thts explained rite

Yea you forgot that one piece about differing pressures but yea makes more sense now.

that will be a pain to fill one chamber to 100 psi and another to 50

sounds plausible and effective, nice work on the diagram.
