There's nothing in the geneva convention about shooting personnel with 0.50 calibre rifles, indeed all the major powers (and quite a few smaller ones) have such rifles in their arsenals - although to be fair, they're usually classed as "anti-material" rifles made for shooting equipment at ranges where hitting a man-sized target reliably is stetching it a little.

Technically it's expanding ammunition (hollowpoints, dum-dums etc.) that cannot be used. It makes sense on the modern battlefield where enemy soldiers are likely to be wearing armour as such bullets while good against exposed flesh make very poor penetrators of cover.

Yea, but to what extent can you put rules on war? War is hell, the violent expression of anger and hate that only humans are capable of prooducing.

War is war, that's a good point ShowNoMercy...Most of the time, it's the leaders of the nations that begin a war, and send thousands of soldiers of all ages at the butchery.
The laws on war of the geneva convention are never respected, you've seen these leaked videos of americans torturing iraqi families...
they snipe with hi-powered PCP's, they shoot to kill, with what weapon doesn't make a difference. Take a bullet from a black-powder weapon at 1000fps is bad. Take the same bulet from a 3000 psi dual-shot air rifle makes the same wound; geneva convention or not.

I agree. But it's a sad thing that humans can love and be good; and in the meantime, be capable of burning children for the only reason it's war.

But my roommate is convinced that big (.50 cal) rifles are illegal to use by the geneva convention
bull crap man, the millitar even has rifles larger than that I think about 20 or 30mm but thats not true the only law like that is the that any firearm (not including shotguns) with a caliber larger than half inch in considerd as a dagerous device and hevely taxed and regulated. Ironicly this aplies to .50E magnum(pistols) that are really .53 but not to .50 bmg guns like the M2 and beretta anti-material snipers

If you are talking about America i don't think they sighned the Geneva convention.

There is no reason why you should need a .50 cal sniper if you are not in a war. When was the last time you saw a armor plated deer?

America is indeed a signatory of the Geneva convention(s), along with over 100 other nations.

There is no reason why you should need to fire a spud out of a PVC tube either, but wouldn't it piss you off if someone banned you from doing it?

ShowNoMercy wrote:Yea I have seen them before, and on the topic of big rifles in Iraq, I know that the mercenary force, Blackwater, use them. But my roommate is convinced that big (.50 cal) rifles are illegal to use by the geneva convention so I dont know. The blackwater guys are pretty bad ass, they came to my school to use our ship to practice forced landings and entries, but I also know that they are in some hot water for some of the things they have done in Iraq.
Geneva convention specifically states that it does not affect the use of weapons in war. There is the Hague conventions and the Geneva protocol which deals with the use of biological and gas weapons, but that is all. All you have to do is look on youtube and search 50 cal and you'll find heaps of vids on using 50 cals in Iraq. To be honest, I'd rather be shot by one tank shell than 10 shots from a m16... It's when it becomes too detailed and ambiguous that the Geneva convention becomes ignored. Like laws, there are probably alot of things you have done in your life that technically would put you away for a lifetime that you wouldn't even know about. Wouldn't it be great if they just put up a new Geneva convention that said, no wars, period. International law, no one goes to war... Not really, because no one would listen then. But yeah Brian, awesome gun dude. Need to get some data loaded up for it.. Love to see some vids..
