Just throw some random douglas adams quotes in there and you've got a winner.
Trust me, i would never pick this topic, it was given to me as a "honor" or some korny shit like that. Might try the adams quotes though, probably make the paper a little mroe interesting.

The Sioux County Sheriff's office responded to an explosion with injuries at 915 Hayes Street in Hull, Iowa around 8:20 Friday night. 21-year-old Ryan Meerdink was reportedly firing the potato gun when an explosive powder inside it ignited and ruptured the device. Meerdink was rushed to the Sioux Center Hospital with life threatening injuries and later died. The state fire marshall is calling the explosion an accident.

KSFY spoke with Ryan's family today about what happened last night to with the potato gun. They said that Ryan was hit in the stomach when the device ruptured. Three other people were with Ryan when the accident occurred, including his soon to be fiance, Cortney.

When KSFY spoke with Ryan's mom, Donna, she said "He was a young man who's life was taken too early. He was a good man to all. He has many friends and loved the outdoors and was very adventurous."

While the family did not want to appear on camera at this time, they say they do want to raise awareness about the dangers of potato guns. We spoke with a local expert about the dangers that come with building such a device.

"When something goes wrong with a potato gun, it goes very wrong," said Jim Sideras, Division Chief of the Sioux Falls Fire Department.

Ryan Meerdink's life was taken by a homemade potato gun when something didn't go as planned.

"They sound very innocent. It sounds kinda fun. When you see them being shot it looks fun, but just because of the nature of what involved they're very dangerous," stated Sideras.

Potato guns are typically handmade with PVC pipe, a propellant, and an igniter. When these three ingredients are combined, they cause a powerful force, shooting a potato 2- to 3- hundred feet in the air. But these ingredients can also cause deadly consequences....

According to Division Chief Jim Sideras, "The problem can be if something gets plugged up, too much propellant, it will actually explode."

The problem with potato guns is that while they're very dangerous, they're also very easy to make. There are hundreds of videos and websites that have directions on make such a device.

"It's very concerning when you see the amount of information on the Internet on how to build them," said Sideras.

But no matter much information is available, there is no safe way to make one.

"If you or your child has a potato gun, its best just to get rid of it. Its not safe. Sooner or later someones going to get hurt with it and the injuries can be very sever and be life threatening," stated Sideras.

Once again, Ryan Meerdink's family members hope people will learn from their son's accident and that it will keep future incidents from happening.
:(
In the video they refer to Division Chief Jim Sideras as an "expert"
Obviosuly he didn't read the website that has ALL the information on how to make safe spudguns and how to act responsibly with them. They need people like Joel(SGTC) to comment on stories like these where they can actually point out the fact that this guy lacked common sense and didn't do enough research.

How come we never see an article like this one?

You forgot to add the part where the 'expert' talks out of his ass.

The most common cause of a crash is when an excessive amount of fuel is accidently leaked into the cars combustion chamber and the car explodes.

good point ;)

Don't worry about being too careful with your English when you write back guys, the article is riddled with spelling mistakes and bad grammar :?

Haha, excellent modification jack, does a great job bringing out the sensationalism

The fact that he put an explosive powder in it would make it comparable to driving drunk, running a stoplight or trying to make a Dukes of Hazard style jump. Anyone with common sense would know that nothing good would come of it.

Well, they don't have to know who sent it :)

Anyway, if possible I would like to know more details on the injury that killed him. Getting hit in the gut isn't normally the easiest way to get killed (Houdini excluded:).
Have you seen the movie "Three Kings"?
Three Kings wrote:Say a bullet tears into your gut. It creates a cavity in the dead tissue. That cavity fills up with bile, and bacteria, and you're f*cked

A grenade (which is effectively what this Darwin award candidate turned his spudgun into) doesn't kill in the same way as a bullet.

The Mythbusters illustrated it very well in their "grenade and guts" episode. Fragments from the grenade are usually tiny compared to bullets but fly out at phenomenal velocities.

No I haven't seen that episode yet, but sounds interesting. We're only up to the 'Big Rig' episode with all the truck myths. So what kills you from the 'nade? Does it just take out your vitals?

*cough*torrents*cough*

It's still the kinetic impact of high velocity projectiles, but a multitude of tiny fragments at hypersonic velocities as opposed to a single bullet at 2,000-odd feet per second.

There's a fascinating (if a bit morbid) study of wound ballistics from WW2 to Korea to be found here (warning - not for the queasy)

There are some interesting studies using (presumably dead) small animals with tiny high velocity saboted spheres fired from a smoothbore rifle, scary stuff.

That's really intresting stuff.

BTW you would never catch me using a torrent, ever. I have a source where I get my stuff from and a few websites, but I can't tell you here so PM me if you want to know more.

@jacksmirkingrevenge: I was going to stay out of this discussion but I do have to say; when I read your post about that article I could actually visualize it an "expert" testifying at a podium with all the wires and microphones in his face telling, as serious as he could, how bad it is to drive cars. I almost peed my pants.

"It's very concerning when you see the amount of information on the Internet on how to build them," said Sideras.
I think that if there was a book written and published about how to safely construct a spud gun then people wouldn't think they are so bad. People just think that if you learn it from the internet then its sketchy.
