Well as some of you may know i'm heading over to America (California to be precise) for 2 weeks, during this 2 weeks I will probably have no internet access and wont be online, so Pete i'm leaving you with a bit extra modding to do during this time.

To be exact i'm going to L.A for a few days, then to L.V for 2 nights, then to San Fran for a week. I hope to pick up alot of spuddiung supplies with the $700USD I have for my budget :P

I leave Thursday around 4pm, so thats 9am Pacific time I believe(+7).

Few questions I want to ask, mainly for noname or frank as I believe they live in Cali

1) how much is it on average for a 1" sprinkler valve and the materials required to mod it?(blow gun, 1/4" brass nipple)

2) is it possible to buy a QEV from a physical store(not online)? I have the cash so I can pay big.

3) Where's the best place to go for 3-4" fittings? It'd be best if it was fairly common not like some stand-alone plumbing merchant.

4) Ipod, I got mine stolen in Rome earlier this year and need prefably a 80gb video, would duty free at the airport be the best place to get them cheap or is there a better place to go?

That's all my questions for now, I may think of a few more soon.

Thanks.

i live in CA.

(1) a modded sprinkler valve will be about $30 at the most. some sprinkler valves cost more than others, usually between $10 and $20. the green orbits work the best, they are also the cheapest. a blow gun is about $5 and a nipple is maybe 25 cents.

(2) ive never seen a QEV in a store.

(3) there is a hardware store called "Osh", they have 3'' and 4'' pipe. it will be easy to find a good plumming store in a big city though.

(4) Target, Best Buy, Costco (if you are a member, if not they will probably still let you shop there)... the airpost will probably be expenceive.

There is a lot of specialized sprinkler/ construction stores out there. They will be all over LA and LV. Although I would try shopping around a bit.

To bad you didn't come earlier. I have been in LV three times in the last month, and am going down in mid-october.

As always the best of luck in your travels.

Just kidding.

For the getting of materials out of country, you may have to consider shipping them. I don't know how customs is ATM, but you might have some sort of hassle with getting pipe and fittings through a carry-on or regular suitcase. You may have to get it tagged and loaded with the stuff like hunting firearms and whatnot.

I think small brass fittings and guages and valves and schraders and blowguns should be fine, i'm just worried about the galv fittings.

LV!
Thats where I live.
Here in vegas you can get QEV's at a store called Fastenal.
http://www.fastenal.com/web/storeInfo.ex?branch=NVHEN
It says they carry them instock.
But if they don't I might be able to arrange my father to purchase some and you could buy them of him.
You can get most sized pipe at either
http://www.consumerspipe.com/locations.html
or my personal favorite for PVC
(best)

As for an Ipod, your best bet would to go to a Bestbuy store.
There are several around town.
A quick google search would give you some.
best of luck

Well, for me, a modded 1" sprinkler valve costs:
$10.99 for the valve
$1.50 for a 1/4" close nipple
$5.99 for the blowgun.

I've never seen a QEV in a store, but if I ever do, I'll be all over it like the ants in my house.

For 3" and 4" fittings, like hi said, try to find an OSH (Orchard Supply Hardware, but the store says OSH on the signs and stuff). The only problem with the OSH in my area is that it only sells 3" and 4" PVC in 20' lengths.

Schraders are usually about $2.50, maybe a little more. All the pressure guages I can find are $8 or more (the $8 being a crappy piece of shit that goes from 1-15 psi). A 200 psi guage is like $25.

Idea for the galvanized fittings:
Bring along some marbles and say that you make little tracks for the marbles out of the fittings. You use threaded ones so you can take them apart and make new ones if you want to, right?

Haha yeah that marble idea sounds good.
I can get guages here cheaper then you so unless I find some cheaper I wont get any.
For the big fittings I might get a 4" end cap and a 3" plug.
Oh and maybe some 2" fittings while i'm at it.

Under $20USD to mod a sprinkler valve seems pretty good to me, it'd cost me that much here just to buy one.

Thanks for those links Frank, should help out. I got two days in LV and should locate the store.
