Yes, but I never said it would affect the accuracy, just the velocity. Does it have rifling going the opposite way in there at the end? How does that not create sidespin? I have a bent spot or two in the center of my bbmg. and now the bb's spiral...?

You're all probably right. Changing direction uses up a lot of energy, plus the frictional losses would be great, especially if the coil has a small diameter. I may try it out anyway though...

i got 10ft of coiled 3/8 flexible tubing. i occasionally put 6mm bbs in it and shoot them. it seems to be reasonably accurate and has a lot more power than when i straighten a piece and shoot.

I think it would work best in a barrel with a shape like this:

This way the projectile doesn't have to change direction much, and because the projectile won't fit the barrel perfectly, it may roll on the outer edge of the pipe, reducing friction. Of course then the ammo would be spinning pretty fast as it exits the barrel, could make for some interesting shots. Having a longer straight section may help reduce spin.

Hey

yeah, that spiral thing might work. I was wondering, because the ball will be spinning in the barrel from going against the edges, could you position the coil in such a way that it can be used as a hop-up system?

Sorry for the off-topic post but hey goose_man, you the same goose_man who made CS?

I wonder how fast the ball would be spinning as it leaves the barrel, it would leave conventional rifling for dead.

Well, the French already call their assult rifle le clarion :D

if the coil was positioned so that the exit was on top, then the ball would have an insane amount of backspin, causing it probably to rise quite a bit, but a little more straight barrel could counteract that.

@singularity
it has less power when you uncoil it because when if it is normally coiled, then when you uncoil it it will loose its round shape and flatten out.

edit: wooooot! i now have an avatar!

Here's something to think about
Normally, a projectile going around a curved barrel would lose energy, because of the fact that it wants to move the barrel as it travels (action and reaction).
But would a bbmg, potentially having several projectiles in the barrel at once, be able to balance itself out in terms of barrel forces? It would be more like having a coiled garden hose than a gun barrel.

I'm not familiar with CS (or what is stands for). I've only used goose_man on this forum, so I guess not. I didn't know someone else had it elsewhere.

this is how I am looking at this. I suppose it would work if you could eliminate the friction factor through some stroke of genius.

In general the coil seems less aerodynamic, which would be bad enough without the constant alteration of velocity. (remember velocity is also direction) ex. going 15mph east and swerving around a bend to go north will result in a greater energy loss than going north in the first place.

but i would love for you to prove me wrong and show me some mad scientist type stuff.
Yeah, like maybe if there was a magnetic field throughout the length of the barrel that surrounds a magnetic projectile. But even if the projectile friction issue were solved, the remaining problem would be the air pressure friction -- like you stated. :P

CS=CounterStrike, and curve barrel would work but if in any case you had a jam it would not be a good day. Figure out a way to clear jams and your good for the making.

A concern i believe with this design is air escaping around the projectile as it curves through the barrel.

Yeah, CS = Counter Strike, its a mod for half life, it was first made i believe by a guy called goose man. Then brought or something by Valve.

I still don't understand how a short length of barrel can straighten it out... I mean, an airsoft gun hopup is at the beginning of the barrel! :?
