I don't know how I could use that exactly, but I may buy the magazine housing there. Clear would let me know how much ammo I have left!

I don't see much point in a helix magazine for round ammo, come on the ammo is balls it doesn't get much easier than that use a hopper, or try a carosel feed

if to demand a hlex this is what you do, take 2 pipes that sleeve use a router to cut the inner pipe into a spiral, and for the center axile cut groves or use half pipes and line the entire axile and attach a clock spring, or even a rubber band

examples the helix mag is best known in the calico's magazine system

Thanks, that will be very useful! I'll probably use an elastic band as the torsion spring now that you mention it. I don't want to use a hopper because it is so big and high-profile, a nice helical magazine is what I'm after, though mostly just for fun.

I can't tell what pic this is because my school blocks it but I think It's relivent based on the caption and site location
Not really relevant as that refers to the bolt mechanism of the Kriss Super V which directs the recoil forces downwards to allow for more accurate automatic fire.

Maybe you were thinking of the Calico?

The Russian PP19 Bizon and Chinese Chang Feng submachineguns use similar magazines, and a vaguely similar design is applied to the fearsome GAU-8/A 30mm gatling fitted to the A-10.

I swear I saw on google mentioning the calico,

if your doing this so you can put the ammo below the barrel, then try an airsoft hi-cap design, I can't quite find a good diagram but its like a hopper with a (clock)springloaded wheel that rotates and pushes ammo up into the gun, I cant find a good diagram, but it will be easier, and you might be able to mod an airsoft high cap clip for ball bearings

Don't order clear tubing from them it costs more there than usplastic.com.
The only reason I directed you there was because usplastic doesn't have that item.

EDIT: Oh, and you wanted to know why I showed you the spiral rod? Because it acts as a guide for the bb's duh! If you put that inside a tube the bb's are forced to stay along the channels... Provided that you have an axle that is secure. If I am understanding the concept properly of course....

Wow, this is a great idea for paintball! The advantages is a compact size and no rattling of a paintball hopper. I want one for my sniper, as I need to be silent!

If you are able to make one that would be sweet!

I think your idea could be combined with ammosmoke's. It would be easy to coil some flexible tubing inside of another tube. The downside, like you said, is a long spring and high ammo friction and pressure.

To fix this, you could cut a strip out of the lenth of the pipe (end to end) before it is bent into a spiral. In other words, if you looked down the pipe, it would look like a "C" not an "O". This gap would face inward along the helical spiral. A "ammo paddle" (a flat circle that fits insids the pipe) would be attached to a central spring through the gap. This spring would push the paddle, which would spin around the helix, pushing the ammo towards the loading mec.

I made a picture, but it is rather crappy. You should be able to get the general idea though.

old thread
it is used for paintball
there is some company that uses this design to create under barrel paint ball feeders but I don't know what its called

and you could try copper tubing to reduce friction, and the spring is not a problem, put a clock spring on one end or use a rubber band bungee cord or what ever

@hail I get the idea but maybe you should try making a 3D drawing on autocad or something?

I think that idea is definately worth a shot.

The company is called q-loader.

I doubt this idea would work in any way. Sorry but the complexities would be hard to work out unless you were an expert machinist.

@iknowmy3tables - yeah, I fogot the standard "Sorry to kinck this thread up" heading, I know it is used in Q-loaders, it was stated earlier in this thread.

@Zen - Sorry, I don't have access to any 3d software, or the knowhow, and frankly, I'm lazy.

@Gooseman - I am making a paintball gun, so I will most likely try it if you don't, and if I have the money.

@spudgunnerwryyyyy - Uhh, why do yo think that? Are you refering to the first design mentioned, or the combination? I do not think it would be to hard to make a coil of tube in a pipe, with a tension spring in the center to push the ammo down.

Coiled tube - no spring needed

I tried searching to see if I could find details of your gun, but no luck, so I don't know 100% if this'll work for you.

The problem with a coiled tube magazine is as you've pointed out that any spring would have to be very long. Here's a way round that using air pressure.

The simplest way would be to put your coiled tubular magazine inside some PVC tubing like in the diagram below.

You use the ballvalve as a filler for your ammo, tip the whole thing vertical and pour your ammo (pink) in, then connect a pump, whatever and pressurise your magazine (yellow). Close the ball valve, and voila, the pressurised air inside the PVC tube forces the ammo forwards into your breach. You could even put this set up inside the guns chamber if you wanted it very clean looking or no doubt attach it with quick connect valves, whatever.

In a true helical magazine, the spring doesn't have to be long at all.
