I am a sophmore at Aviation High School, and that is the extent of my credentials. HOWEVER, I do pay full attention to safety, and frown apon anyone who doesn't. I despise it when people come up with excuses for their stupidity, which in reality they have none.

Ok, but as far as the ignition system, ehh sounds like a strange idea to me. A magneto would definitely not feel good to get shocked with, and it has enough amperage to injure a person. (Unless it is a lawnmower one or something) However, there has been many people who have safely used tazers for spark strips in their guns. However, this is usually recommended for more advanced spudders. To me, a magneto sounds like a rediculous and impractical way to ignite a gun. For a beginner, I would recommend a BBQ sparker, or perhaps duel BBQ ignition with a pullback system.

If you are willing, you could help him and ask others on the forum for advice with a sparkstrip. This is a more practical way of going about it in my opinion, and it will still create a lightshow. It would also be much more economical.

to me, using pvc to launch golfballs, taters, and tennis balls is fairly impractical and a little ridiculous in itself. but aren't we still allowed to dream?

When you where a kid did you ever duct tape tennis ball cans together and coat the inside with lighter fluid drop in a tennis ball then throw in a lit match? I did. Those where the first home made launchers. My point is, look how far they have come. Isn't it amazeing, the smarts some of these youngsters have. Never in my wildest dreams did i ever imagine way back then that one day i would be squeezing off shots with a blow gun as a triggering devise!

Nothing wrong with a magneto ignition.

I'd personally only want one on a large combustion though. Snaffle a rip-cord one from a garden power tool and yank the cord to fire :D

"We don't need no stinking credentials!"

Sorry but I had to, just saw it

Wow, got shot down there didn't I! But, you did sound a little irritated with the notion of him doing that though. I am not going to fuss or anything if he tries it, don't get me wrong.

no one got shot down and crazy ideas don't irritate me. if it weren't for crazy ideas we might not have aglets, 'tato chips, GloFish or even microwave ovens.

The might not always serve a specific purpose, but they sure are fun to use! And shooting is only half the fun. Heck, I'll be lucky to fire a completed spudgun a dozen times. Designing and building is where it's at!

I have seen spudguns built to: launch r/c sailplanes, retrieve said planes when they get stuck in trees, fire antenna lines, test the effects of flying debris during tornados, launch t-shirts for sporting events, launch bird dummies for dog training, fire explosive charges into cliffsides to initiate avalanches... and lots more.

I wouldn't say they're impractical. There are plenty practical uses for these devices.

should be

i did not say that spudguns/launchers in whole had no practical use.

Ah, sorry.

Well I understand why one would think plastic is unsafe. However, it is quite safe provided you use the proper type and use it in the right temperatures and stay below its pressure rating. I've yet to have a part fail because I keep it safe.

Ugh, would you stop trying to be so darn nuetral? You just said that it was stupid basically, and now you are pretending you didn't. We can handle our ideas and thoughts getting shot down here, so please, please, don't worry about it!

just to clear up a few definitions

impractical
not practical: as
a: not wise to put into or keep in practice or effect
example: refloating the ship proved impractical because of the expense or due to pressure limitations, temperature requirements, limited malleability, pvc is impractical for my needs of a launcher
b: incapable of dealing sensibly or prudently with practical matters

practical
a: of, relating to, or manifested in practice or action : not theoretical or ideal
example: a practical question or for all practical purposes
b: being such in practice or effect

where did i say they were stupid?

1 a: slow of mind : obtuse
b: given to unintelligent decisions or acts : acting in an unintelligent or careless manner
c: lacking intelligence or reason : brutish
2: dulled in feeling or sensation : torpid
example: still stupid from the sedative
3: marked by or resulting from unreasoned thinking or acting : senseless
example: a stupid decision
4 a: lacking interest or point
example: a stupid event
b: vexatious, exasperating
example: the stupid car won't start

i am seeing more examples of both impractical and stupid.
ammosmoke, can you find them? possibly a not so neutral comment

He just said that because something isn't practical, then it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. If he wants to use a magneto, then sure there are easier ways of getting a spark but why should he have to justify using another method? In the same way that none of us have to justify to anyone why it's so darn fun using pvc to launch golfballs, taters, and tennis balls :D
