I tried my constant refresh trick no less than five times, but I kept getting booted out with a white screen, with subsequent attempts yielding the "max_users" error.

I was logged in, the most I saw was like 25 people and most of them were unregistered and hidden.

Same here but I think it a little more than that.

I was logged on too and I was very disapointed with the amount of people that actually logged on there were only like 30 people on including the unregistered people.
